Hall yesterday drew up a statement explaining the system by which the chart showing the scho'- -lastic standings of house clubs are drawn up by the university authorities.: Three such charts have been issued in the last three summers, respective- ly. With regard to the rumor that in- structors give "A" grades according to certain definite percentages, and other grades in proportion, Registrar Hall had the following to say:. "There is at this time each year, a persistent and malicious rumor to the effect that the members of the literary .ofaculty are required to distribute the --various grades according ,to an exact' rule. There is no such requirement. Although, according to the law of probability, the distribution for a long term of years might be expected to approach a definite norm, a careful and accurate examination of the reports for the six semesters of the existence of the present marking system, shows that not one of the instructors in any one of his classes has ever conformed ait all closely to this norm." He em- phasized the fact that the above state- ment was made in pursuance to the Swishes of the faculty, ~Folowing is Registrar Hall's expla- Snation of the chart: "Many fraternities and sororities wish to know bow their positions on the chart of comparative stan~dings of house clubs have been affected by the grades received at the end of the first semester. Z give, therefore, an exam- ple to explain the method so tha~t any group may make thje necessary com- pilation and calculatio~n andl thus as- certain the proper standing. "From the reports, the grades of all the members of the group should be tabulated ano the total ;lunmbers of I WILL GIVE FREE With ten or more rolls of films, to be' developed and prints made from 'best nega- tives, one Sxio enlargement from the best negative or one 8xio print of any U. of M. view or one 4x6C portrait of self, made in' my studio.
