THE TAKING HABIT. Several dozen sheets of music are taken from the piano at the Union ev- ery year. Magazines are taken by the score. Newspapers are clipped or re- moved bodily. The practice has con- tinued for some time, and occasional warnings have had little effect. It seems to be rather a matter of course for such things to happen: The distinction between "mine" and "thine" is an -essential one, and the man who doess not respect it, even though he excuses his moral lapse un- der the easy-going name of "swiping," is rot fit for a society which depends on properrty rights. In the case at hand, real inconvenience is caused by the actionssofirresponsible persons. Summary suspension from member-1 ship in the organization, in the event, that a man is caught taking away pe- riodicals, might well be the solution at the U'nion. To train women for work in the so- called Eight Week club work for next summer, which consists of systematic social work among younger girls in home communities, a series of meet- ings under the auspikes of the univer- sity Y. W. C. A. will begin at Newberry hall next Thursday night. The movement among college wom- en was begun by Jessie Wilson Sayre, the daughter of President Wilson, and has spread to most of the larger insti- tutions where women are represented. The definite program and speakers of the meetings will be announced later. Bernice Hannan, '16, will act as toastmaster at the junior-freshman women's luncheon, to be held at 12:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon, in Barbour gym. Valentine decorations and fa- vors will be features of the luncheon, which will be followed by dancing. * * * Prof. John R. Brumm, of the rhetoric department, will coach this year's Jun- ior play, the books and lyrics of which are now ready for the tryouts for parts, to be held on February 20. * * * The course in playground games and dances will start at 11:00 o'clock Sat- urday morning, in Barbour gym. Dean Myra B. Jordan has been call- ed out of town by the death of a niece, and consequently *will not be in her office today. More than 40 university women and men are enrolled in the new course in stenography and typewriting, which is meeting daily.
