In connection with F. L. Hall. THE FREE BOOK EXCHANGE. Local booksellers, it seems, cannot buy and sell second-hand books with- out charging a large proportionate amount for the service. The risk of holding texts that may go out of use is too great to admit of making this tax more nominal. Probably the prof- its for the dealer in this kind of trans- action are not great, all considered, and it is even possible that some of the book merchants might be quite willing to give up the second-hand book department of their business. In order to permit students to get higher prices for their old books, and at the same time to buy other second- hand books at lower rates than in the past, a students' free book exchange is to be opened. Its object is note- worthy. The sponsors of the idea seem to have devised a practicable system. It should work. It will, with- out much doubt, if it is given the sup- port that it deserves. Going on the assumption that con- sistency is the virtue of fools, some people are much wiser than they think. First year men are inquiring close- ly into the use for the new green house in the science building. Here's hoping we won't have to meet those summer school profs, no matter how eminent they may be. Those who get the most post cards about meetings do not always get the best marks. Anyw~iy, prospective opera chicks have an excuse for going to the show this week. But if that is the way of old Siwash, Chicago can have all the honor. )1ajestic Theater Majestic theater patrons approved yesterday's performance by frequent and sustained applause throughout the five acts, each of which had its mer- its. Elements of law, a course especially adapted for the needs of women in the university, will be given during the second semester by Prof. I. Leo Sharf- man, of the economics department. The course will be open only to upper- class and graduate women, except by special permission, and will be elected as economics 45W. It will carry two hours credit, meeting at 2:00 o'clock on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room 102 of the economics building. Professor Sharfman said yesterday, concerning the aims of the course, "First, it will undertake a study of the nature and sources of law, the funda- mental legal cocepts, the relations of law to other fields of study and the leading principles of its growth and development. This purpose is con- ceived both as an end in itself and as an aid in the study of economics and sociology. Second, it will consider the most important specific legal rules and principles in a few subjects, such as contract and sale,'property and con- veyancing and domestic relations, with which women are most likely to come in contact." * * * There will be no Women's League party this afternoon. * * * Women who have not yet joined the Women's League and members who have not paid their dues, will have an opportunity to do so at the table to be stationed in the corridor of the gen- eral library from 9:00 o'clock to 12:00 o'clock and from 1:00 o'clock to 4:00 o'clock today.
