Torrey WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1914. Night Editor-J. M. Barrett, Jr. STUDENTS AND ATHLETICS. The athletic association is influenced more largely by the opinion of alumni and administrative officers than any other so-called student organization on the campus. This is necessary. The popularity of athletics makes the income and expenditure in this branch so large that it'would be unwise to place active management in the hands of a shifting student personnel. This isolation of athletic supervision ,from direct student control has disad- vantages. It cannot help but make the organization out of sympathy with student needs to some degree. The Michigan athletic association has introduced a system for conven- iencing students and others in secur- ing seats for the big games. The scheme is not perfect, but the fact that it was adopted at all shows that the older men who dominate the policy- of the association are willing to consider undergraduate sentiment. This is en- couraging, and it is praticularly com- mendable in that there was no coercion required. Michigan students, it seems, are not altogether unwilling to delegate their authority in athletic matters, or have it delegated for them, as long as those in charge remember that the student body is the chief factor in making up athletic teams and in supporting ath- letic contests, and that its interests are not to be neglected. The lack of clever dialogue and the presence of trite jokes have marred past operas; there is still time to obvi- ate the fault this year. It is estimated that the energy ex- pended in one week-end of dancing would push seven Harvard teams six miles in five minutes. MAIN More than 75 university women at- tended the opening picnic at Palmer field given by the women's athletic association in charge of Bertha Marsh, '5 chairman of the athletic committee. The entertainment consisted of in- formal out-door games and refresh- ments. Mrs. Beryl Fox Bacher, Dean of Women in the school of music, will entertain the women of the Symphonic League and other women of the school of music from 3:00 to 6:00 o'clock this afternoon in t-he Annex. * * * Freshmen women may obtain their complimentary tickets to the opening Y. W. C. A. banquet by applying at Newberry hall. Upper-class women are urged to buy tickets as soon as possible. The banquet will be held at 6:00 o'clock next Saturday at New- berry hall. Because of the interest manifested in the Twilight pipe organ concerts given last year by Earl V. Moore, the School of Music has decided to give similar programs at regular intervals of every two weeks this year. Mr. Moore will give his concerts on the third Thursday of each month while the Facuity' concerts will be given on the first Thursdays. Keen disappointment will be felt by university theater lovers at the' announcement that "Kismet," Kaw and Erianger's remarkable play, will not be staged here Oct. 19, as was planned. Because of the unsettled con- ditions in America due to the war, a play entailing as great an expense as "Kismet" had difficulty in meeting ex- penses. Consequently, "Kismet" was forced to disband yesterday following a performance in Rochester, N. Y. Tryouts for the university sym- phony orchestra will be held at the school of music from 7:00 to 8:00 o'clock Friday. Anyone is eligible to play in this orchestra, the number not being restricted to university studeits. The;usual number of men, 48, willbe picked, unless the marked ability of a larger number warrants an extra large selection.
