Barrett, Jr. ABOUT OURSELVES. Any college daily which did not make a profession of faith-duly guarded and non-committal, of course, -at the beginning of the year, would be hooted out of the ranks for sheer disregard of precedent. So it is that this year's Michigan Daily, which is going to pe pretty much tle same as it has been for the last few years, but which still hopes to make a few inno vations which will enable it to boast of progressiveness, takes this chance of 'orewarning its readers to be on the alert for excellencies which may creep into these columns from time to time. Truth and accuracy will perhaps be fondled a little more sincerely than in the past. At least, if rules, exhorta- tions and thou-shalt-nots in profusion can be of avail in getting Mr. Smith's name spelled "Smith," and the date of Christmas as December 25th, why then we may all hope to pick up our Daily every morning and be reasonably cer- tain that things have happened, and are going to happen, as printed, the common formula of disbelieving "what you see in print" notwithstanding. Giving up for the time any reputed, siniste.r desire to run the campus, may not this year's Michigan Daily take for its aim, "telling truthfully how the campus is being run? Even if the. university catalogue does say that students can obtain board and room for from $3.50 to $6.00 per week, most of us seem to be dangerously near or above the upper figure. It must be unpleasant to- flunk a course, but to sell your text, flunk and then have to buy your book back for double the price is rankest irony Conversation about the war might be a little more concrete if we could on'ly pronounce some of the names of generals and battle-fields. It is up to the psychology depart- ment to explain why we all wear our best clothes during the first few days in Ann Arbor. Michigan has lost a thinking man with a future in W. H. Hamilton. The Coach has a serious look, but it is seriously hopeful. OF INTEREST TO WOMEN All freshman women are required to report at Barbour gymnasium at 4:00 o'clock today to receive general instructions from the Dean of Women and the physical director. Women who have incomplete gym- nasium work for the whole year or firstsemester, and who enter without satisfactory credit are required to re- port to Barbour gymnasium at once. Luncheon for women is served at the Newberry hall tea room from twelve to one. Beginning next week, there will be a social tea from 3:30 to 5:30o'clock daily. Freshmen women who have entered the University this year have received personal help in registering and ob- taining quarters from junior advisors. Eighty-six juniors comprise the com- mittee, of which Beatrice Lambrecht, '16, is chairman. University women desiring employ- 'ment should report at Barbour gym- nasium between 10:00 and 12:00 o'clock. For the first time in recent, years, The Michigan Daily will attempt to criticise productions offered on the local stage. These criticisms will be written under the title "At the Thea- ter," and will appear regularly in this column, along with advance notices of attractions scheduled for the im- mediate future. The reviews will be quite frank, and frequently they may be adverse. Because of the low prices in effect at the Majestic, no effort will be made to compare the bill in that theater with those offered in metropolitan vaudeville. A certain standard of de- cency will be looked for, however, in both of the local theaters. As far as possible, the reviews will be printed the morning following the first ap- pearance of an attraction. Advance notices of coming produc- tions are supplied by the theater man- agement, and include the full-page theater supplement in this paper, and in the regular Sunday papers. On the other hand, all criticisms of plays or acts already staged will be written independently by members of this staff. Notable offerings in- Detroit theaters will be treated from time to time. Majestic Vaudeville Fumble, tumble vaudeville, on the verge of burlesque, opened the week at the Majestic last night. The per- formance, as clever in some spots as it was rough in others, was a trifle above last year's average. BIOLOGICAL STATION HAS SUCESSFUL SUMMER CAMP Twenty-Seven Students Take Advai- tage of Excellent Facilities at Donglas Lake According to Assistant Professor Henry A. Gleason, the biological sta- tion at Douglas Lake has just com- pleted the most successful summer in its history. Dr. Gleason is Director of the camp. Twenty-seven students were present at the camp this year, making, the attendance two less than that of last season. Besides the stu- dents there were eight men doing re- search work independently. "We accomplished more at the sta- tion than ever before," said Dr. Glea- son yesterday in speaking of the sum- mer's work. "The excellent climatic conditions aided greatly in our work."'
