Squad Makes Religious Sur- vey of City During Week-end; Mold Banquet PRIVATE INTERVIEWS EFFECTIVE Work on the university Y. M. C. A. extension service started last week- end when six men journeyed to Orion, in Oakland county, and held a religious survey there. N. E. Pinney, '16, Philip C. Lovejoy, '16, Norman C. Bender, '17, Phil D. Hall, '15, Raymond E. Flynn, '17, and Frank Olmstead com- posed the team of workers. The Oak- land county Y. M. C. A. arranged for the survey. The first meeting was a banquet Fri- day evening attended by 125 men and boys. At this gathering the workers gave information concerning the uni- versity. Flynn, who was pitcher for the All-Fresh baseball team last spring, told of athletics; Hall describ- ed the university's work; Bender out- lined the freshman's first impressions at' Ann Arbor, and Lovejoy spoke of the work of the Y. M. C. A. Saturday the men formed two squads of three each, one making a religious census and the other interviewing the business men. In the afternoon one squad went for a hike with the high school boys, and the other enjoyed coasting with the smaller lads. In the evening the men held a frank get-to- gether with the older high school boys, where they disdussed athletics, voca- tions, sex hygiene and social life at Orion.. On Sunday 'talks were given at the various Sunday schools and at a union meeting in the evening. The workers feel that most effective work was done in private interviews with the boys, but much other good has been accomplished. The boys have circulated a petition through the high school asking that the school board secure a man teacher besides the su- perintendent, this teacher to organize and coach school athletics. The busi- ness men have sanctioned this plan and also have pledged money to se- cure Dr. A. S. Warthin, of the univer- sity medical department, for a talk on sex hygiene. Extension department teams have been booked for three other towns, Rochester, Birmingham and Pontiac, in the same county, and, while at these places, some of the workers will call again at Orion for follow-up work. Ionia will be surveyed next week- end. versity hospital. -Dlean Victor C. aughan of the medi- cal department, was in Davison, Mch- igan, last night, where he delivered a lecture for the university extension lecture course. -Charles M.
