Main St P: *~IIi :Ill I don't have to prove that I am the best and Editor, The Michigan Daily:- As a graduate of the university in 1106, now returned to take a supple- mentary course, the 'writer has been much interested in observing the changes that have taken place in uni- versity life and ideals since he was last there eight years ago. That most of these changes are for the better is clearly apparent, notably so in the case of the marking system, with its incentive to more earnest work in the class-room, and consequent elevation of the scholastic course to its proper position of paramount importance in student life. It is no case of the "good old tines" with me. But there is one recent de- velopment that I cannot see without irritation, about equally mixed with amusement. That is the recent move- ment to "cleanse Michigan athletics" of cigarettes, betting on games, post- victory celebration, and, I suppose, mackinaws, toques, chewing-candy and other student foibles. I don't believe in the old "sowing wild oats" doctrine, or that drink and license aid in the slightest in the de- velopment of true manhood. It is ap- parent to anyone who has observed modern tendencies. that bad habits or unclean life are a heavy handicap for the sti ongest mai to carry. Booze and the double standard of morals are doomed in the-we hope not too distant-future of civilized races. Every effort should be made to pre- sent high ideals of personal conduct' and achievement, and it cannot be gainsaid that the personal example of our athletes; with their prominence in campus .life, would be of great in- fluence in promoting higher ideals in private life. But why go about it in the way sug- gested? Why go back .to the "Rollo" hooks and New England prurient pru- der- ?yWhy try to impose by-rules and regulations, faculty orders and student organizations' standards of conduct which are, after all, purely personal' There is no organization connected with the univerity, from the regents to the S. C. A., which is sufficiently godly to legislate morials for the 6,000 students of Michigan. Such measures may make a few men, but they will make many more hypocrites, and Heav- en knows there are enough of those in the world, without manufacturingj them in the universities. I may be wrong about this. Put the root- ers in the cheering sections in bunches of twenty, each group to be chaperoned by some godly members of the S. C. A. If there is any dearth of chaperones, there are varions organizations who will doubtless furnish volunteers. In- stall clocks in all the fraternities and rooming-houses, which each student is required to "punch" before retiring. Station godly youths with long, white badges to "picket" Larry Damm's and Joe Parker's, and labor with those whose erring feet would bid them en- ter. "The intent is more gracious." Teach by precept and example. But don't harry, harass and restrict. One posi- tive home-grown, efficient virtue is worth a hundred negative, hothouse godlinesses. One corrupt but effective Mirabeau is worth many monasteries of immaculate monks: Liberty is ab- solutely vital to the growth of any en- during virtue, even of those negative ones which our local propagandists seek.
