Where is the enthusias which characterized such meetings i former years? It used to be that whe a cheer was called for, the re sponse came in a throat-tearing, mad 'r dened, exulting roar that fired ever mind and sent blood racing in a frenz of excitement. That was the spirit that was the "pep." That is whata mass meeting is for. To show eac member of the team that every ma wants him to win. That is the psy chology of the thing. And what do we find in place of this An orderly gathering that marche: calmly to its seats, listens to a fe well chosen and dignified words, me chanically barks out a few yells, an( then as calmly meanders home t peaceful sleep. That isn't what w< want. We want to be savages an cave men for a while. That's what w used to find at old time mass meetings and it is a shame that we can not kee up the custom. No man should judge harshly unless he knows where to lay the blame. I this case there are four things tha have done much to kill the "pep." First and foremost, there is the fus ser. Fussers do not yell; they jus bring the girls to witness the spectac- le. They plant themselves in the mids of the throng, separating enthusiast and dampening ardor. Keep the fuss ers away, or if not, set them where they belong, in the middle of a crow of girls. And, incidentally, with all due respect for the gentler sex, give fellows the preferred seats. One nev- er thinks of putting girls in the cheer ing section on Ferry field for the rea- son that it demoralizes the yelling, Then why give them such a position in a mass meeting thatthey may work havoc on the spirit there? Second, too many come to the meet- ings to be entertained. This isn't a display to outsiders of Michigan spirit. They can see all they want of that down at the game. Yet hundreds come merely to view this unusual and enor- mous collection ct college 'students, gathered together in one of the most wonderful halls in the world. They sit in admiring silence, when the seats they occupy should be filled by the hundreds of enthusiastic students, standing outside the doors. Any stu- dent who was unable to secure a tick- et, and the number was surely great, feels with double force the strength of this argument. No wonder Haff had a hard job getting up "pep"; no won- der he complained of the lack of spirit and the listless cheering. Third, there is the present poor sys- tem of giving out tickets. The only result of this is to allow outsiders to secure any number of pasteboards, while the students suffer in conse- quence. 1, myself, secured the next to the last ticket at 12:45 o'clock Friday, and the last one went as I was handing over my coupon. Surely, hundreds were disappointed Friday afternoon. Do away with all this ticket nonsense. Why not present coupons at the door, then only students would be sure to get in, and none would be disappoint- ed. The dozens who have neither time nor convenience to get around to the Union, would be sure of admission, and the rest of us would be spared the nuisance of making an extra trip to; the Union.. Moreover, there could not possibly be any chance for favoritism or irregularities, which I do not claim exist, but which, are easily possible under the present system. The fourth "pep" killer is an out-; growth of the ticket system. Whereas, formerly, it was, come early and rush for good seats, now, it is, take yourI time and be assured of a highly satis- factory position. The exhilaration of rushing for places is nearly gone. That was where the "pep" used to start. From this state, it was the simplest thing in the world for a speaker to arouse great enthusiasm. But now the crowd files in as to a theater. The speaker says his piece, amuses for an instant, and then retires to be replaced by another actor. And when all is over, the theater crowd files solemnly out. The spirit is wrong, the atmosphere is wrong, the system is wrong. VICTOR H. SUGAR, '16.
