Torrey SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1914: Night Editor--C: A. Swainson. THAT MICHIGAN BAND. It was not so many years ago that the band of a rival institution appear- ed on Ferry field, and everybody bus- led themselves in making slighting comparisons, to the disadvantage of the Michigan band. Last Saturday the tables were reversed. The Wolverine organization appeared on Soldiers' field, Cambridge, and the eastern press has not yet finished its commendation. Those who did not go to Harvard, but who saw the band yesterday af- ternoon on Ferry field, can understand the enthusiastic reception of last week. The spirit engendered by such an organization is hard to resist. As an exhibition to relieve, yet intensify, the struggle itself, the band is becom- ing a necessary adjunct of the Mich- igan team. The band was given a deserved trib- ute recently. If it continues to im- prove in the all-around way that has marked Its history for the last twoI years, it will not want for consistent appreciation. Often it's the student who sleeps through his lectures who studies until two or three bells every morning. All-American prospects are attract- ing much more attention than the lat- est from the war zone. "Buzz" came back, and several thousand rooters are pleased as a re- sult. State Street Ask to see the New Michigan Calendar It is a "Beauty" at 60c . g+ Editor, The Michigan Daily:- In this morning's Daily, at the hot- tom of the third column on the first page, there appears an item headed "Mistake may give boat site." The first paragraph of this item is as iol- lows: "Director Floyd A. Rowe, who was engaged in surveying land for the University this summer, has discov- ered that two acres of land up the river, near the place where the Boat club regatta is held, belong to the University." I take exception to the publication of this statement for the following reason: I was called to the telephone last evening fron the dinner table- to be asked by a . "Daily reporter" with regard to this "discovery." I informed the person who talked to me that it was not a discovery; that the deed -had been in the University offices for years, and that his understanding of the matter as expressed in his ques- tion to me was incorrect. Notwith- standing my statement to him the ar- title appeared according to his precon- ceived notion or desire and directly contrary to my statement to him as to the truth. In addition, there was theI added impudence of the head line "Mis- take may give boat site." The ques- tion naturally arises, Whose mistake? I have always endeavored to give courteous attention to representatives of The Daily, even when telephone tfrsit Musflwic ob Corer Maynard and William Stteets Mic igan. That last glimpse out of the car win dow. interviews have come at inopportune times, and when the question 'of the interviewer showed such ignorance of facts which should be known to every freshman in the University that the questions themselves were barely in- telligent. I draw the line, however, at the point where The Daily prints an article in direct and unmistakably in- tended contradiction to the facts as I, have stated them to the reporter. I do not see how I can continue to give information to an organization which tacitly accuses me of giving it mis-in- formation. SHUXLEY W. SMITH, Sect.
