Michigan officially makes her debut in the water sports today under the auspices of the Michigan Union. Hith- erto unrecognized, because of lack of facilities, rowing, diving, and swim- ming, in all their varied forms, have found a home on the New Barton Pond. With the entries in today's regatta nearing the hundred mark the begin- ning is auspicious. Many innovations have grown into traditions with far less support. With favorable weather, success will attend today's carnival. Hun- dreds of expectant townspeople and visitors will line the banks of the Hu- ron. A new sport will be introduced, in the athletic lists and if the proper support is given it wil become perma- nent. It does not take a big stretch of the imagination to foresee a Mich- igan crew in the near future. With a straight-away over a mile in length, student interest and support and with competition close at hand, nothing short of the miraculous can hinder the establishment of the water sports on a permanent and substantial bas- is. This will be your privilege as a Michigan man, to benefit both your- self and the Union. Graduates find it hard after they get out to keep in touch with the univer- sity. They find it difficult to conserve all that student life has meant to them during the years here. They find it diffi- cult to continue a relationship that should mean much to them through the years coming after. It means a good deal to be identified with the Union during your college course; it will mean a good deal to keep in touch with an institution that is "for Michigan men everywhere." It will be worth while to have a place to come back to, to feel at home in. And don't forget the new club house! Being a life member of the Union will help to make you a good alumnus. You will have something in 'common with the !campus and its aspirations. You owe support to the Union and the university. As a student you have tak- en what other men before you have left; it's your turn now to remember your obligation to the men who are coming after you. Sargent almost lost his chance of qualifying in the high jump, as he was tied with Dougles of Yale for last in the preliminaries at 5 feet, 9 inches. In jumping of the tie, Sargent regain- ed his prowess and left the Easterner at 5 feet, 11 7-8 inches. There is good reason to believe that he will place towards the leaders in tomorrow's fin- als. With the mile and two mile runners yet to be seen in action, nothing more definite can be asserted beyond the probability of the Harvard stadium furnishing the scene for a three cor- nered battle betwteen Cornell, Michi- gan and Pennsylvania. Harvard, al- though leading in the number of men qualifying for the finals, with 12, does not figure promisingly for any of the first three positions, as few are count- ed on to last through the finals.
