If any place in the country can im- prove on Michigan's 1913 Interscholas- tic, we're open to the arguments. We have it on the authority of men who know something about interscholas- ties, that the Ferry field invitation meet, concluded yesterday, was one of the cleanest, most interesting, best conducted meets they have ever wit- nessed. A great deal of credit is due to those who had its intricate management in charge, and to the students and groups of students who looked after the entertainment of the visitors. Whatever objections might have at- tached to previous Michigan intercho- lastics were not present this year and we have been assured that the future state meets will be delegated to Ann Arbor. Much good will accrue to the uni- versity through the medium of these visiting youngsters who have since left for home with vivid impressions of the advantages offered here. It is only natural to hope and logical to be- lieve that the 1913 success will be con- tinued and even bettered in the years to come. FOR A FRIEND. Self sacrifice is about as rare as anything that exists and many cynical- ly inclined doubt its very existence. And yet in one event of yesterday's meet it was so complete, and notice- able, that nearly all saw it and under- stood. Sheldon of West Branch was the man who made the sacrifice, Mac- Kay of the same team, the recipient, Sheldon, distance runner, won the half mile easily. In the mile run, MacKay and Sheldon were both en- tered. Early in the race the two slip- ped into tire lead and as they ap- proached the finish tape MacKay was leading by inches.' Sheldon looked 'around and saw that no rival was near enough'to cause trouble. Then with MacKay making a desperate effort, and Sheldon with a strong sprint still in him, he urged MacKay on and fell back allowing MacKay to win and contenting himself with second. It didn't seem much to do. But when one figures that by this Sheldon lost the cup for individual point win- ner, the cup donated by "Spider" Coe for the mile, and a gold medal, besides the honor of winning, the price ap- pears. It wasn't much to do and not all noticed it, but it goes to prove that the world isn't totally dependent upon Old Sol for all of its brightness. UNIVERSITY NOTICES.
