T oere are times when people may be excused for LOOKING BACKWARD-it is when they pass a man with l LOTHES made * MUSIC AN DRAMA. By a happy combination of interests the Drama league of Ann Arbor and the Proscenium dramatic club will produce an out-door play early in, June. The play selected is "The Well of the Saints" by John M. Synge, and the performance will be solely for the members of the Drama league. The play will be given in the garden of Dr. and Mrs. Wm. P. Lombard's home, on Oxford road. Since last spring, when the Pros- cenium gave Masefield's "The Tragedy of Nan," with great success, in Sarah Caswell Angell hall, the club has con- fined its efforts to private performanc- es, several of which have been given at the home of Albert Lockwood. The present arrangement is peculiarly for- tunate, as it will give the members of the league an opportunity to see one of the important modern dramas, and will assure to the Proscenium players a more interested and sympa- thetic audience than they could find on the campus. The selected play is by one of the poets who have helped in the great Irish movement, and is well represen- tative of the movement, and a beautiful play in itself. The scenes of all three acts are laid out of doors, and the Lombard garden lends itself perfect- ly to the necessary arrangement. The principal parts will be played by Miss Marjorie Nicholson, Edward Moseman and Lawrence Clayton. Richard Pride and John Townley will direct the per- formance. G~ENERAL LIBRARY RECEIVES NEW CONSIGNMENT OF BOOKS The university general library has recently received several consign- ments of new books from abroad. Among those purchased were, forty- two volumes of George Sand's French novels, thirty-one volumes of general Spanish literature and one hundred four volumes of French historical documents. Besides these the univer- sity received as a gift from Columbia university, thirty-nine doctor's theses submitted at that institution. DETROIT WOMEN RAISE FUND FOR NEWBERRY REST-ROOM. Funds for the rest-room at Newberry hall have been increased $50 by a gift from the Detroit Sorosis. The money was sent to Dean Myra B. Jordan who at once sent it to the Y. W. C. A. sec- retary. This is the second project that has received the endorsement of the Detroit women recently, as they start- ed the movement for a residence hall to be erected this fall if possible. With the mercury fitfully vac- illating between intemperately hot points, the change will not be un- welcome. Judging from the success of the scheme last year, at which time it was inaugurated, the plan will meet with unqualified favor. Several coincidences combine in making May 17 a happy and logical dedication as 'Straw Hat Day.' Be- sides the weather conditions there are several distinctive collegiate customs that fall at this time. On Saturday morning the annual spring contests between the underclasses occur on Ferry field. In the afternoon Michigan will meet Syracuse in her first out- door track meet of the year. The ev- ening will be taken up with an all senior sing. The city, as usual on all such occasions, will be crowded with hundreds of out-of-town visitors, and the donning of straw hats could scarcely go unnoticed. Then all you who have social preten- tions have an unqualified opportunity to join the elite, you who have not, have an equal opportunity to be an outcast, for the day at least. Get out the 'Straw'-shined, washed, revamped,' reblocked, dyed, or what not-but get' it out and join the procession.
