Definite action in regard to reform in the present c'nditicns and methods f rushing, pledging and initiation must be taken by all fraternities and ororities before February 15, 1914, ac- <7rdinu to an action recently taken by the university senate. This comes after a saeries of conferences with the representatives of the different socie- ties and the university authorities and which were agreed upon by both. How- ever, no rules relating to the life of the students in the various house clubs will be imposed by the senate before March 1915. Reasonable provision must be made or a certain r.inimum of credits to be earned(uring residence at the univer- isi before a student can be considered for membership. Pledging and rusing of freshmen are to be prohib- ited and students may not be admitted as members until the beginning of the sophomore year. The rules adopted must not be less decinite or less stringent than those now,, maintained at the University of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin rules pro- hibit the pledging of men who have not entered the university and also provide that freshmen shall not lodge or board in a fraternity house. No student shall be initiated while on probation nor before the sophomore year. Freshmen are prohibited from being entertained by the fraternities singly or in groups at chapter dances and shall not be taken to the theater or other places of amusement. All students must be refused mem- bership who have become members of any societies of any sort existing in violation either of the rules of the schools or of the laws of the states from which they come. Investigation of the scholastic rec- ords of all fraternities and sororities were made by the university senate in taking the action. The results of the compilation, placed the general soror- ities at the head of the house clubs and above the normal average of the uni- versity students. Other women's clubs also were above the normal average. All unorganized students, profession- al sororities, all house clubs, profes- sional fraternities, other men's club's and varsity athletes were above the passing grade while the general fra- ternities fell below and were last on the list. Honorary societies like Phi Beta Kappa come at the head of the list when the whole student body is con- sidered but they were left out of the above compilation.
