It is Farrell's well founded judg- ment that the freshman runners did not produce the greatest speed they are capable of, but were hampered by inexperience and by a siow track. To make sure of this it has been decided to allow them the second trial in the hopes that on the last stand they will di n and cut off the 440 yards, in the time of three minutes and 30 sec- onds that the trainer has set as the mark that will qualify them for the trip to Franklin field According to the promise made to the verdant track men earlier in the season, they have no claim to advance for a second trial, but were awarded it because of the consistent training on the part of the candidates. The competition for the four berths has been narrowed down to five men who will struggle among themselves for mention in the final selection. The five are Smith, Gore, Uifer, Catlett, and Lyttle. Not in the least daunted by the crit- ics of track events who pick Dart- mouth as the favorite in the running of the two mile relay event at the Pennsylvania field day, Farrell is con- s Building Telephone 27 Y M cDonald's [Hoppe's Former Store] Liberty St. Remember! Bancroft fident that Michigan can lay claim to a string of half milers fit to compete on equal terms with any in the coun- try. While the times to bemade today will probably not be made public, "Steve" is not reluctant about admit- ting that he expects it to be good. Ev- ery candidate for the two iile team is considered to figure prominently in the trials, is running in his best form. Farrell looks particularly to seven men to farnish the hottest competition in today's trials, but has not eliminat- ed the entries to this number, any with the desire, being eligible to run. Capt. Haff,, Lamey, Jansen, Haimbaugh, Brown, Otte, and Smith, are then men relied upon to show the speed in the half mile, with the possible addition of Blake. Although originally a mile runner, Smith has put forth enough speed to name him among the con- tenders in the shorter mill. From Philadelphia comes the news welcome to Michigan supporters that the two mile relay is scheduled to lead the mile on the days program. This mean's that 1-Taff will be able to use his strength in the event Trainer Far- rell thinks the Wolverines3 have the surest chance to win. The Varsity quarter milers are grinding away on the cinders and will not let up until they leave for the east. That they made a poor time in the Saturday trials has been incentive to goad them on in their training, and will certainly result in better time in the show-down than in the trial.
