Night Editor-Lester F. Rosenbaum SERVICE FOR OTHERS. With the finding of the last of the Huron's victims on. Sunday a little band of Michigan students brought three weeks of devoted service to a close and returned to books and stud- ies. It has been day and night with them on the river ever since the acci- dent occurred, regardless of weather conditions, and with never a thought of a spring recess sacrificed or routine university duties neglected. Perhaps this work will never meet the appre- ciation it deserves from the university and from the student body, perhaps the classes missed by these searchers will make a difference with their June ex- aminations, but their reward is the' gratitude of the families of the unfor- tunate ones, and the ideal of service which they have given to others by reason of their own unselfishness. AN INTROSPECTION. Upon the text, "one day in the Mich- aelmas term is worth two at the East- er session," the Toronto Daily took oc- casion recently to point out that "the wise one' will attend fairly diligently to his daily work, and thus escape the grind at the end, necessitated by early neglect." There is this inducement to avoid the period of cramming, but,. in addition, there is another more forcible still. It is the faculty of mental appli- cation. No man can presume to possess this ability until his capacity for conc en- tration has become habitual, to the ex- tent that conscious mental effort is no longer necessary to overcome dis- tracting influences.: As is the case with. all other habits, so this ability will not become fixed through sporadic action, but only after a great number of trials. The conclusion follows then that al- though some certain person may be able to master a few miscellaneous facts in a given subject by an all night session the day before the examina- tion, yet if he 'resprts to this practice continually, he will lose the most im- portant thing of all, the ability to mas- ter himself. Social Science Club Meets Tonight. The Social science study club of Michigan will meet at 7:30 o'clock 'to- nlight in the seminary room of the eco- nomics building. Martin Feinstein, '14, will read a paper on "The Litera- ture of Socialism. David M. Bavly, '15E, will give a book review of some of the principal volumes dealing with Socialism. This will be followed by a general discussion of the essentials of economics study.
