The Coburn Players recognized:
throughout tiie country as representa-
tive Shakespearean actors, are booked
at the Whitney theater for' Nfonday,
October 21.
-The Cobaurn players are considered
the most evenly balanced organiza-
tion of dramatic artists before the the-
ater-going public of today, The rea-
son for this is obvious, for the fact that
each member is allowed, and even
encouraged, to play his part well., no
matter how small it might be. They
attach far more importance to pre-
senting a play for the play's sake than
to bring forward too prominenatly
some one part, and obscuring others
for the purpose of emphasizing some
"bright particular star."'

MUSIC AND) iRAAIA.
The Historical, Recitas,
Wednesday afternoon of this week,
Albert Lockwood will inaugurate a
series of hstorical piano recitals
which is notable in many ways. In
chaping the character of these re-
citals fromn one-comuposer prorams
to miscellaneous programs, two ob-
jects were kept in view; first to have,
a change frozp the tradition of many
years standing; second, by placing.
works of different periods and schools
in immediate contrast, to gain a more
telling juxtaposition. em,
Since it is impossible present
more than a small fraction o the pi-
ano literature in six recitals, it has l
been planned to have this series sup-
plemented by another given in Frieze
Merorial hall by assistants in the pi- I
ano department. Students of the pi-
ano will thus have a greater oppor-,
tunity to hear more of its luxuriant
growth.
The plan of the present series of six
recitals was intentionally made rather
elastic. Its general scope is, first, to
give one of the great sonatas and one
of the great fugues on each pro ,ran;
second, to call attention to the re-
markable works of Godowsky, who
has given new life to a on, series of
half forgotten classics in an artistic,
intricate and novel "modern dress, and
Schulz-Evler, whose labors in the
same faithful field of transcription
have resulted in the best concert
waltz of mnodern times, as regards not
only transcription but also the origi-
nal writers. So far this seems advis-
able, viz; Debussy, who is represented'
by some works not, yet heard in Ann,
Arbor; fourth, to continue the studyE
of the works of Franz Liszt begun lastf
year during his centenary and in doingC
so to present four compositions new
to Ann Arbor; and fifth, to remain
faithful to Scrlatti Mozart Haydn,
Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms.
