In the abbreviated" accounts of Mich- igan alumni banquets and similar events out in the world, which come to us of occasion, we sometimes find a name which we have seen time and time again in the records of human achievement, the name of one whom the world has given the rare appella- tion of "big." It is in this, way that we have learned for the first time that many "big" men are also Michigan men. One of the most effective remedies for this deplorable ignorance concern- ing those, who, through their deeds, have been most instrumental in mak- ing fame for Michigan, is embodied in Secretary Smith's suggestion to the New York alumni that a "human ser- vice" prize be bestowed each year up- on the most deserving Michigan alum- nus. From Prof. Davis has come the idea that the prize might well take the form of a tablet in a Michigan hall of fame and has added that the latter be plac- ed in the Memorial building. We hope that these ideas will grow into reali- ties. Michigan has been complimented for her reluctance in blowing her horn. It is to be hoped that we will never begin. But no one will oppose the plan on these grounds. Nowhere does it savor of the spirit of boastfulness. It is plain, unadorned duty. We want to inspire our underclass- men to follow in the footsteps of the illustrious who have gone before. How better can this be done than by a true hall of fame in the Memorial building? Let's make it a real Alumni Memorial building-a memorial to true great- ness. Prof. Riggs to Address Assembly. Professor H. E. Mr. Carle as a much married doctor who is always in trouble, and Miss Williams as the unconventional "girl" have parts that give their varied talents full scope. Grand Opera This Week. During its earlier seasons the Aborn English Grand Opera Company con- fined its efforts to the older and more familiar repertoire. This season, how- ever, they vary their routine and two of the novelities on the list, of special interest are "Madam Butterfly," and "Hansel and Gretel." That the demand for engineers is' at present greater than the supply, and that satisfaction is being given by Michigan graduates is shown by the numerous requests for engineers which are continually coming in to profes- sors of the engineering department. The Carey company of Detroit, which specializes in roofing, the Pennsylva- nia railroad, the United States Engi- neering office at Sault Ste. Marie, and the American Bridge company, ask for from three to ten men of the civil, electrical or mechanical departments. All who desire to know more about the conditions should see the heads of the different departments through whom the offers were received.
