Rowdy Student Curbed by Anarchistic Oratory THE MSSERS. SHUBERT AND LEWIS WALLER Present ;The Dramatic Sensation of the Age Should Evary Medical Man, Get a MIC ROSCOPE and GET IT rn of ;EreS tE WEST TLES TE STREET Emma Goldman, anarchist, calve to Ann Arbor yesterday, delivered two lec- tures in a down town hall-one mile' from the philosophy lecture room in University hall-and departed last night, leaving several hundred stu- dents, a dozen instructors and a score of club women to do some tall think- ing. "Damaged Goods," Brieux's famous didactic play, was Miss Goldman's sub- ject in the afternoon and "Syndical- ism" her topic in the evening. Ver afternoon audience was the more inter- ested. Varied crowds, ranging from a dean to the "rough-neck" student, who spent a quarter for an opportunity to take part in a prospective "rough-house," made up the lecturer's audience. A. Rowdy Student howled and jeered be- fore the address began but the'appear- ance of the middle aged, forceful-ap- pearing woman was sufficient to hush his hoots. A few sentences informed A. Rowdy Student that here was not merely an emotional agitator but a calm, reason- ing philosopher. A few minutes more and he was listening intently with the others to a woman who dealt frankly and startlingly with a question which many men avoid or handle with kid gloves. What Miss Goldman said startled her audience. They had expected that. But even assertions which cut to the quick brought only more concentrated atten- tion. When she sat down at the con- clusion of each lecture amid genuine applause, to which faculty men were enthusiastic contributors, there was little disposition on the part of anyone to laugh or ridicule.
