COO State Street Sffir of the BI White Shoe weakened in its influence. "The council has a bigger responsi- bility to the campus than to these men whom it has interviewed. It could turn its evidence and findings over to the faculty with the recommenda- tion that the men be expelled, and I believe, that the faculty would accept their findings without question, and act accordingly.. "The faculty might not necessarily adopt this extreme punishment. It could merely publicly censure the men found guilty." CHINESE WOMAN ORATOR TO DELIVER ADDRESS TOXORROW Miss Sui Wang, who acted as toastmistress at the international sup- per last night, will speak to the women of the university tomorrow in New- berry hall on "China's Crisis". Miss Wang is a graduate of a women's col- lege in Nanking, China, and last year won the state collegiate oratorical contest for women. Relating her per- sonal experiences in China, Miss Wang will contrast conditions as they exist today in her native land with those of several years ago. Alpha Nii Chooses Initiate Debaters. Six Alpha Nu society initiates were chosen last night in the first tryouts, and from these six three men will be chosen at a later date who will meet the Adelphi society initiate represen- tatives in the annual debate. The men chosen were the following: M. Wein- berger, J. M. Barrett, F. W. Voorhies, T. H. Hoogsteen, E. Rankin and D. T. No committee could do more to provide against the action of a mob. The order to exclude the out- side crowd was given to the committee -and not by them--to prevent certain people entering the gallery, as their actions last year were objectionable. What followed was the result of yel- low journalism. Deliberately falsified accounts of the Hop by newspapers not connected with the university aroused the members of the faculty and the general public. Letters of protests poured into the university of- fice. Something had to be done. Action Was Hasty. The senate council, made up of men who either did not attend the Hop, or else while there evidently found noth- ing to object to, called a meeting to consider the matter.dThey did not see fit to call before them either the committee or the faculty men present as guests, but they got their informa- tion from newspapers, hearsay, and the statements of members of the mob outside as to what they expected to see! Naturally the senate considered the abolishment of the Junior Hop. What other action could the senate take with the accountsof the yellow journals assumed as facts? I have taken pains to call on Mrs. J. E. Beal, one of the patronesses, for a frank opinion of the Hop. Mrs. Beal assures me that she found nothing ob- jectionable, and I feel confident that Regent and Mrs. Sawyer are of the same opinion. A great injustice has been done your committee, which I hope will be righted in the near future, and I know it to be a fact that a great many of the men of the senate council feel, themselves, that th e action was rather hasty. Very truly yours,. (Prof.) GEORGE W. PATTERSON. STARTING ajesticMONDAY NIGHT VAVDEVILL -E AAGAIN EXCLUSIVE ENGAGEMENT FAMOUS 8®BerlinVadcaps Late of "Eddie Foy" Cormpany.
