MAINTAINING LEADERSHIP Michigan's debating records, .revis- ed up-to-date, show twenty-nine vic- tories out of the forty-two contests participated in during the past twenty- one years-a remarkable showing, and one that Michigan should, and is, just- ly proud of. In this field of activity as in athletics, Michigan is the undis- puted leader in the West. The reason for this is not to be found solely in the superiority of the material that enters into the compo- sition of Michigan's debating teams. As Governor Ferris said after the Chi- cago contest last night-"the training is probably the key to the situation." We have our Truebloods in public speaking as well as our Yosts in foot- ball which is the main reason for be- ing optimistic about the secure foot- ing in the future of our remarkable present standing. "CAWPY!" About a year ago a big row was kicked up on a portion of the campus over the failure of the law department to get space in the 1912 Michiganen- sian. This came about owing to the failure of the jurists to get their copy in before the time limit had run, and the editors refused to extend the limit. The same time limit exists this year and justly so. If exceptions were per- mitted, the book never would get out of the hands of the printers in the time alloted. A protection of the interests of those interested in an early appear- ance of the senior annual is more im- portant than the possible hardships in- flicted sometimes on those who pay no heed to the numerous warnings given out. To borrow from the print- er's phraseology, the "jig" will be up on February 1 this year, with no ex- ceptions, and the organizations and classes should govern their diligence accordingly. Prof. Roth Gives Extension Lectures. Prof. Filibert Roth, of the forestry department, left Ann Arbor Thursday for the northern part of the state, where he will deliver several exten- sion lectures. He expects to return Sunday. Southern Men Invited to Join Club. All southern men are invited to be present at the meeting of the Dixie club on Saturday night at 7:00 o'clock at the Union. At this meeting it is desired to get as many new men as possible to sign the roll call book, and some routine business will be trans- acted. Next semester it is planned to have several smokers and other social functions. Many Fresh Lits Payed Class Dues. At the initial payment of class dues by the fresh lits yesterday, about 350 freshmen payed the half dollar tax. A second collection will be made in the spring. All members must have their dues paid to date in order to par- ticipate in any of the class activities. THEATRICAL CIRCLES. "Peter Pan." A great deal of the undoubted charm of "Peter Pan"' in which Miss Adams is to appear at the Whitney theater on Monday, January 20, assuredly lies in the manner in which the play is act- ed and staged Barrie, himself must have felt in writing his fantasti- cal creation that its success would be due in no small measure to how it was done; over done it might lose its effect entirely. With a Scotchman's canni- ness he therefore left his actors little excuse for going wrong. Among the players are Robert Peyton Carter, Fred Tyler, Byron Silvers, Wallace Jackson, Dorothy Dunn, Marion Abbott and Margaret Gordon. The company is both strong in cleverness and in numbers. The production is not only a heavy but a picturesque one and its advent here is being awaited with much pleasure. UNIVERSITY NOTICES.
