Coaches Conklin and Douglas had a busy time with their freshmen yester- day afternoon, putting them through the usual stunts of punting, passing, and formiation work, while the twilight was given to stiff scrimmaging in an- ticipation of today's bout with the Var- sity. Two teams were brought into action in the scrimmage and frequent substitutions gave a host of material an opportunity of charging Conklin's team of heavies, with Gault of Ann Ar- bor High fame and Hillner the beefy center, as the chief points of attack. Young and Reem worked with the light weights and a neatly . exe- cuted forward pass which when captured by young developed into a touchdown, resulted in the only score of the practice. Young showed great speed and with Reem and Crumpacker was responsi- ble for many yards of the total num- ber gained by the lighter squad, Beesh- ler, Norton, and Benton also showed up in promising form and should de- velop into valuable men for the fresh- men. Although the strength of the Alma team cannot be ascertained, their showing of former years will warrant a lively contest for the first year men on their initial expedition. Among the men who will be pitted against the regulars this afternoon will be: James and Scott, end; Co- crane and Beeshler, guards; Norton, Benton, Quail, takles; Rhoem, Gault, and Dillman, half-backs; Scott, Nor- -ton, Dillner, full-backs; Young and Reem, quarters. TWO CUPS TO BE GIVEN TO WINNERS OF CROSS COUNTRY Thirty-five cross country runners re- sponded to the call for C. C. C. candi- dates at Waterman gymnasium last evening. Capt. H1aimbaugh, Director Bartelme, and Trainer Farrell met the men in the trophy room of the gymna- sium and discussed plans for the fall training, Captain Haimbaugh outlined the proposed work of the club. He stated that this year two cups; would be offered for the fall race' instead of one which has usually been given. In addition, the first three novices to finish are to receive their letters. Haiinbaugh also stated that an eastern trip, probably to Cornell, .would be aranged if the showing of the squad warranted it. He urged the men to get out and do some real work. Trainer Farrell gave the men a help- ful talk along the lines -of the proper method of training for cross- country work and the best kind of dieting. Di- rector Bartelme also spoke on the same subjects. A number of cross country men worked out yesterday. It is the plan of the trainer and captain to have squads out every day the weather will permit. At first there will be three squads, a fast, intermediate and slow, so that all candidates may have the proper kind of competition. Darge Squad Turns Out for Tennis. Interest in the fall try-outs for the tennis team has rapidly increased dur- ing the past week, and prospects for next year's quartet are, exceedingly bright. It will be necessary to pick a squad of seven men in the early spring, and any who wish to try out should report to Capt. Andrews. An eastern trip will be taken early in May beside the matches with ither colleges which will occur on Ferry field. The fol- lowing men have already reported: Hall, Miller, Shafroth, Batsch, Holm- boo, Ehlers, Montgomery, Spencer, An- drews, Reindel, Oliver, Pinnell, Trum, Blanchard, and Perry.
