Bostonian Reader Gives Interesting Interpretation of Modern Dramas to Appreciative Audience. "There are good plays that are bad, and bad plays that are good. The question for us is whether we should approve and support that play that is faulty in construction but helpful in its teaching, or the technically perfect play that has a bad influence on our standards of living." The message and influence of modern drama were the main points in the lecture and readings were given last evening by Miss Marie Ware Laughton of Boston, under the auspices of the oratorical association. Miss Laughton is an ear- nest student of the drama, especially1 in its more modern phases, and is moreover a reader'of cultivated intel- ligence and finely artistic taste. The program she gave last evening was enjoyed by the usual few hundreds who attend the offerings of the associ- ation. The selections which Miss Laughton made for her illustrations were the "Pigeon" of Galsworthy, Kennedy's "The Terrible Meek," and Synge's 'Playboy of the Western World"-the materialistic drama, as she somewhat uncertainly termed it; and Maeter- linck's "Sister Beatrice"-a drama of symbol. A beautiful voice, charming personality, and much histrionic pow- ei made Miss Laughton's interpreta- tion of these plays more than inter- esting. The most that can be done by a single person in the presentation of drama, she accomplished, and in a way to please and impress all her list- eners. ischmitt, Apfel Coo- { a ' Q uarry's The Drug Store on the Corner Buy Gym Towels and Soap Quarry Drug Co. d Chocolates p notch in - - UNIVERSITY NOTICES. SPEAKS OF EXPERIENCES IN TURKEY TO CERCLE FRANCAIS Recalling the impressions that sev- eral years in Turkey left upon him, Mr. Harry Wann of the French fac- ulty, gave a reading yesterday to local followers of the French language un- der the auspices of the Cercle Fran- cais. Particular mention was made of the differing traits of the natives of the Balkan peninsula, and of the his- torical and social relations of the Turkish empire with her neighbors of the Peninsula. Mr. Wann's reading was made especially interesting by his personal recollections of the life that he led there as an instructor in the Roberts Institute of Constantino- ple. MUSIC AND DRAMA. Faculty Concert Thursday. For the first time in many weeks the university school of music has only one concert scheduled for the week. This will be the regular December faculty concert. Thursday night's concert will find two artists who did not take part last time: Mrs. George B. Rhead, pianist, who is always a great favorite, will contribute two groups, while Samuel Pierson Lock- wood will do Bruch's well-known Concerto, No. 3, and Mr. Howland a group of Shakespeare songs. - The program promises to maintain the high standards both as to quality and variety which have been set in the preceding concerts on this year's se- ries. The public is again reminded that all concerts begin promptly at the hour scheduled, 8:00 o'clock, and that the doors will be closed at that time. Persons entering late will be obliged to wait until the end of the number. The full program will be announced tomorrow. We can express Huyler's candy to any part of the United States. Agen cy 214 S.
