Wilila'm Howland gave a; recital of some of the older classics yesterday afternoon in the High School hall, which was heard and enjoyed by a large number of music-lovers. The recital was the first, of the two which Mr. Howland has announced for the year, and included selections from the song literature up to the time of Schu- bert. In some of the older German and Italian lieder, Mr. Howland's voice and art are at their best. He gave the Beethoven "Erlking" yesterday with superb dramatic effect. And in the group of early Italian songs, his tone was beautiful for its smoothness and its perfect bel-canto. The group of English songs was perhaps most fa- vored by the audience, and the concert closed in a burst of applause. Mr's. Rje ad Gives Recital. On Friday evening of this week the next Faculty Recital will be given in school of music 'hall by Mrs. George B. Rhead of the piano department. Mrs. Rhead is well known as a fine pianist and at her many appearances in Ann Arbor has always demonstrated her remarkable ability. The public is re- minded that the concert Friday even- ing is complimentary and all are wel- come to attend. The program is as follows: Prelude and Fugue E minor, Op. 35 ...... Mendelssohn Sonata F major............Mozart Nocturne, Op. 15, No. 2...... Chopin Etude, Op. 25, No. 2.......Chopin Ballade, Op. 52 ............. Chopin Phantasia, C. major, Op. 17.
