Al- ready about 300 feet of the big twelve inch pipes have been placed beneath the ground, and the digging of the trenches is opening out over the entire campus. There will be 9,000 feet of main in all, embracing thirty-two scat- tered hydrants, and using water sup- plied by two big motor driven centrif- ugal pumps which will be presently installed in the hydraulic laboratory of the new engineering building. The pressure afforded by these pumps will be 150 pounds per inch. When it falls below that point, an automatic switch will be thrown in starting the pumps to work. In order to insure against an absolute drainage of the naval tank, from which the water supply is coming, in case of a large fire or ex- tended demand, five connections of eight inch pipe will be made with the city water main.
