If the new plan i adopted by the student body it should stay any repetition of clique control which has characterized many elec- tions in the past. When appointments to committees are restricted as they are at present, when team captains who made the nominations are beseiged by a dozen clamoring candidates, most of them supported by well organized rings, when votes are openly traded, it is time to institute a system which will give capable individuals a fair oppor- tunity to qualify for athletic offices. The proposed arrangement has the added advantage of affording prospect- ive candidates a chance to become fa- miliar with the duties of the office which they will assume if elected. At present the official duties of the base- ball manager are limited to the chas- ing of batted balls over the' grand- stand and the safe guarding of the bat- bag on tris. The office of football manager is almost purely honorary He goes with the team for games away from home, but as a general rule souie hired official attends to the tran-spor- tation arrangements, checks the gate receipts and performs most of those duties which in other schools are del- egated to the student manager. Under the new system all sopho- mores who apply to the athletic associ- ation are placed on the football, base- ball or track committees as they choose. From these underclassmen, two men are selected who have shown the most ability during the year, and one of them is elected by the members of the association to the office of as- sistant varsity manager. He then au- tomatically becomes manager th fol- lowing year, and has the advantage of having had two years of actual expe- rience, before assuming office. That he will be better qualified to retrieve lost balls seems reasonable. That he will be considered competent to do more than that, is quite possible. That he will be a man who btter represents the choice of the student body than many of our managers in the past, is a practical certainty. Woolsacks to Hold Initiation Banquet.
