The Union with its new facilities is in shape this. year to make these functions bigger and better than ever before if it has the support of the campus. And the support of the students, it seems to us, will be in direct ratio to the extent to which they appreciate the value of these class gatherings. Aside from the promotion of the class unity and acquaintanceship, we have a very def- inite thing in mind. The most important thing in educa- tion, as somebody has said, is the meeting of mind with mind, the inter- change of thought which strikes sparks as when flint meets flint. Com- mand over information and power of application are essential factors in turning out an efficient product of the university bred man. But knowledge and mental ability are a dead weight until vitalized by tle human touch and stimulated by social contact. When evaluated on the human side it is per- sonality that counts, and personality is nothing more than the habitual ex- ponent of reaction of an individual's mind in contact with other minds. This is why we believe in all the activities that the Union is attempting to foster and particularly in the class dinners. Here you will find men of your own age, experience and inter- ests-men; you can talk with. You will have a good time, you will learn something, and above all you will give your mind a little exercise in meeting and returning the thoughts of other men. Buy your ticket. RJEWISH SOCIETY TO HOLD SMOKER TUESDAY EVENING. Menorah, the Jewish student society which holds regular meetings every other Sunday, will have its first smok- er at the Michigan Union next Tues- day evening at 7:30'o'clock. One hun- dred or more students are expected, judging from the attendance of former, years. The usual refreshments and "smokes" will be provided and speeches will be delivered. Among the faculty Prof. R. M. Wenley of the philosophy department, Prof. Moses Gomberg of the chemistry de- partment and Abraham M. Fox of the engineering department will speak. In the student body Rob A. Hess, 18, and Solomon Blumrosen, '13L, Varsity debater in 1911 will respond -A. J. These] portable scaffolds were originally, built against the general consensus of opinion on the campus. Hardly any- body believed at the time that they would be a success but it has been clearly demonstrated by the accom- plishments of the constructions, as re- gards mobility and adaptibility, that they are not only a success materially but financially as well, saving in time and labor nearly $1,500.
