DEANS TO HOLD CONFERENCE. Ann Arbor is the first small town to be favored with a meeting of the National Association of Collegiate Alumnae. The annual convention will be held here the week of November 11 and will be an important one in many respects. A complete reorgani- zation of the by-laws on more demo- cratic principles, is planned, besides the admission of numerous new col- leges. Reports of all local chapters concerning their special work, will be read, bringing out the multiple ac- tivity of the association as a whole. The meetings will be for the most part, general, and the public is cordi- ally invited to attend. Social events of the convention will include teas at the homes of Pres. H. B. Hutchins, and Regent J. E. Beal; the regent's recep- tion in Memorial Hall, and other af- fairs planned by the alumnae of De- troit. In connection with the convention of the alumnae, will be the conference of abc t 35 women's deans from various colleges and universities, who will be entertained together with half a score of college presidents, by Dean Myra B. Jordan, on November 11. Prominent among representative American women, attending the con- vention will be Pres. Mary E. Woolley, of Mt. Holyoke; Miss S. P. Breeken- ridge, of Chicago University; Miss. Ju- lia C. Lathrop, chief of the Children's Welfare bureau, the presidents of Bryn Maur, Vassar and other women's col- leges, besides prominent club women. The association has a membership of nearly 5,000. Divided among 48 branches scattered throughout the country, these women bend their inter- ests and energies along the lines of civic and educational betterment. Es- pecially are they interested in the con- crete problems of the living wage and the economic efficiency of college women, better housing, sanitation, pure food, juvenile courts and conser- vation. STRONG NUMBER OBTAINED FOR ORATORICAL COURSE. Miss Mary Laughton, of the Drama league of Boston, has been booked by the Oratorical association for an ad- dress and reading about December 1. Although arrangements have not yet- been definitely made for 'the num- ber, it is practically assured. "Miss Laughton conducts a school of speech arts in Boston, and is unusually strong on the platform. She has many speaking engagements, especially with women's clubs," said Prof. Trueblood, in speaking of her. As one of the leading members of the Drama league, Mips Laughton is an ex- cellent authority on subjects of this nature. She is delivering a series of five lectures before the Twentieth Cen- tury club of Detroit this winter. MUSIC AND DRAMA Faculty Concert This Thursday. The second faculty concert of the year will be given on Thursday even- ing of this week at 8:00 o'clock, in high school hall, and not only will the program include various important compositions never before heard in Ann Arbor, but the personnel of ar- tists will add a significant member to its list. Anthony J. Whitmire, the new member of the violin faculty, who has recently returned from a three years' term of study in Berlin, and who last week, in conjunction with Mr. Dotterweich, gave one of the most suc- cessful "faculty recitals" on record, will present a group of those recent- ly discovered classics, so appealing to any audience, and so peculiarly adapt- ed to Mr. Whitmire's style. William Howland will sing three songs by Hans Hermann, and Albert Lockwood will open the program with the prelude from the Holberg Suite and the Ballade of Greig, and the "Canon and Fugue" by Mr. Stanley. Those who last year heard this com- poser's "Suite in the Old Style" for piano and violin, and his "Attis" for orchestra, the year before, will antici- pate with pleasure the opportunity of hearing another work of one of Amer- ica's very few composers of genuine value. Albert Lockwood will bring the pro- gram to a close with Schulz-Evler's extraoi dinary transcription of those well-beloved waltzes of Johann Strauss. JUNIOR LAWS WILL SMOKE WITH MANY FACULTY GUESTS Junior laws will give a smoker at the Union Friday, November 8, at 7:00 p. m. Among those present will be Dean H. M. Bates, of the law depart- ment, Dian M. E. Cooley, of the engi- neering department, and Professors R. W. Aigler, T. A. Bogle, R, E. Bunk- er, E. C. Goddard, E. Holbrook, and J., B. Waite, of the law department. No formal program will be carried out, impromptu speeches and music from the class quartette being the order of the evening. The smoker will be par- tially devoted to a discussion of plans for holding the class dances, dinners, and the time and place of the annual banquet. Tickets for the smoker, 25 cents.
