Veteran "M" Man Responds to Appeal
of Coach and Is Ready if
Crippled Team Needs

In response to an urgent appeal
from Captain Paterson and Coach Yost
that he come out to assist the badly
shattered Wolverine football squad,
"Hub" Bushnell, "M" man and availa-
ble for an end, halfback or quarter-
back post, made his appearance on
Ferry field for practice yesterday af-
ternoon following an absence of over
three weeks.
The coming of Bushnell cast a slight
ray of cheer over the regular Blue
Monday practice drill. The tow-head-
ed veteran had been kept out of active
football by a eonflict in studies. Fol-
lowing a confernce yesterday the mat-
ter was satisfactorily arranged and
Bushnell will no doubt be given a
place on the Varsity squad as soon as
he masters the signals.
Sweeping changes in the Varsity
lineup failed to materialize at the sig-
nal drill yesterday, the absence of Pon-
tius, kept at home by sickness, causing
the only switch from the lineup which
played Saturday. Mead took Pontius'
place at full while Galt substituted for
the injured Catlett, still kept out of
practice. Lichtner played at the
guard he finished in on Saturday,while
Traphagen was sent by Yost to try
himself out at the center against the
scrubs i the short scrimmage which
closed the afternoon's workout.
The coach satisfied himself with
chasing the regulars up and down the
field trying out signals while he spent
the majority of his time watching the
second string men scrapping with the
reserves.
With the possibility of being num-
bered among the favored ones who will
be taken on the Vanderbilt trip as an
incentive, the second string men play-
ed havoc with the scrubs in the scrim-
mage yesterday afternoon. In a half
hour of play they ran up a total of 21
points to 0. and managed to show to
the small crowd of rotoers which lined
the practice field a few of the trick
plays which Yost is now giving his
men.
Twice with a trick and once with a
straight buck, half back Diehl carried
the ball across the scrubs' last line
for counters. Watson and Quinn, the
other backfield men, both played good
games agains the reserves. Watson
got away frequently for a long gain
while Quinn once nabbed a scrub for-
ward pass and raced thirty-five yards
with it before he was downed. Peter-
son, played a center, did the best work
for the under fellows.
INJURED PLAYERS
IMPROVE RAPIDLY
The two men injured in the game
against M. A. C. on Saturday, Catlett
of Michigan and Blake Miller of the
Aggies, were both reported yesterday
to be rapidly recovering.
Miller, the more seriously injured of
the two, was so far recovered on Sun-
day morning that the physicians at the
Hlomeopathic hospital allowed him to I
be taken back to Lansing. Late Satur-;
day night he fell into a natural sleep1
and woke up Sunday morning perfect-

ly rational.
Catlett will be taken from the Uni-
versity hospital to his rooms today. He
is still suffering a great deal of pain;
from the terrible wrench given his
back, but it is expected that his im-
provement will be rapid from now on.1
It is practically certain, however, that
he will not be in shape to take the;
trip with the squad to Vanderbilt.
