Main St. 1 Coffee Roasters Grocers FOOTBALL STAR IS NOW A BENEDICT Ernest F. "Tommy" Hughitt, idol of the Wolverine athletic world, sprung his biggest coup of all Wednesday, when he secretly married Miss Eliza- beth Jane Meldrum, and stole away from Ann Arbor with no one the wis- er. Not until yesterday did the fact that "Tommy" had deserted the ranks of the bachelors become known on the Michigan campus. In the meantime Coach Lundgren was planning to use his third sacker in the game today and was wondering why he had not turned up for practice. Athletic Director P. G. Bartelme knew nothing of the mar- riage until word came from Hughitt that he wouldbe back in the city by the beginning of next week. The ceremony was performed Wed- nesday noon at the St. Andrew's Epis- copal church by Rev. Henry Tatlock. Only a few relatives and close friends were present, the bride being attended by her cousin,'Mrs. Joseph G. Black. Frederick Marble, '15, acted as best man. Those who were present kept the marriage strictly to themselves until Mrs. Arthur R. Meldrum, the bride's mother, made the announce- ment yesterday. Before he had time to get out of the city, "Tommy" was forced to stammer out an admission of his new status, that of a benedict. But he immediate- ly followed it up with the assertion that he would be in school next fall and would be ready to play for Michi- gan against Harvard and the rest of the Wolverine's opponents. The new bridegroom also expects to be able to finish the remainder of the baseball schedule, although he will be absent from the M. A. C. games. Hughitt played quarterback on the Wolverine team last fall and was one of the bright stars of the powerful eleven. This spring he has been third baseman for the baseballssquad.tHe is a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and of Michigamua and Tri- angles. His bride's home is in Buffa- lo, New York, although she has been living in Ann- Arbor for the past year. Her brother, John Meldrum, is enroll- ed in the School of Music. CAMPUS NUMBER OF GARGOYLE TO BE PUT ON SALE TODAY The editor of the Gargoyle is said to have left town yesterday. It is not known when he will return. The reas- on for his hurried departure is the fact that the Campus Number of the Gargoyle will be on the streets today. This number of the humor magazine is almost entirely local in its appli- cation and will have as main features, caricatures of well-known-men-about- the-campus, whose failings and foibles will be thrown into the white light of publicity. The cover design which is indica- tive of the contents of the number is by Francis A. Bade, managing editor- elect, while cartoons of the "big men" are by Clark Smith and W. H. Smith. Humor and satire on campus life has been contributed by H. R. Schradzki, W. Alfred P. John and Sylvan S Grossner. ARTICLE ON POWER PLANT FEATURED IN MAY TECHNIC CLUET, PABOD & C., Ie. Following this policy that "dark horse" Smith was chosen by our track coach as one of Michigan's competitors for last year's intercolle- giates. This is the second time in the past five college years that the writer has publicly taken issue with an article appearing in any of the University publications, but the editorial above referred to is so absurd th&-he can not resist the temptation to point out its utter lack of foundation.
