Maurice Toulme..........Managing Editor Adna Johnson ............Business Manager H. Beach Carpenter............News Editor Fred Foulk ..............Assistant to Editor F. M. Church................Sports Edit FRIDAY, MAY 29, 1914. Night Editor-D. R. Ballentine. TUT, TUT, TUT! The news columns are considerably alive, this morning. Mr. Bartelme wields a truculent and a most clever! pen. It is unfortunate that the com- munication seems so "red-headed" and spleeny. Mr. Bartelme does catch us in one mistake. It was said that ten men must be sent to hold member- ship in the intercollegiates. It should have been that ten men must be sent to receive a share of the receipts. So Michigan sent ten men. But The Daily has never "pruned or distorted" facts, within our knowledge, chiefly because there is no cause to do so and because The Daily attempts to be decent. The charge is "so ab- surd" that it answers itself. An argument was made in behalf of' the track men who spend one, two and three years on the Michigan track and show enough ability that they have a possible chance of placing. It was said that these men should be sent (even more so now that it is discover- ed that it costs the athletic association1 practically nothing). These men should be sent, because it would show proper appreciation on the part of the uni- versity, it would give the men added experience and there is just the shad- ow of a chance of their winning a point or so. Crumpacker, Plummer, Lamey, and Quail are such men. Lltm- ey has served Michigan for two sea- sons. It would cost practically noth- ing to have taken him, yet he has not been taken. Crumpacker and Quail are sophomores. Experience would be a good thing for these men. Espe- cially so, since the cost is so trivial. Yes, there is a valid criticism of the policy that has been followed. Possi- bly, in some measure, this policy ex- plains the dearth of track material, which causes such a stir each spring. Then The Daily (with all its pruning and distorting) is appealed to to call upon the "Michigan Spirit" of the stu- dent body. For shame, to be so for- getful! "The utter lack of foundation," then, of all the athletic stories that appear in this paper is based on the slightest misstatement, which in no way affects the principle involved, and for which, a most sincere apology is immediately forthcoming.
