Church.................Sports Editor SUNDAY, MAY 24, 1914. Night Editor-F. F. McKinney. LO, THE POOR LAWS! The tradition smashing, "immemori- al," senior 'laws stand alone, in not leaving a class memorial to the uni- versity. The fits, the engineers, the dents, the medics, the pharmics, the homeops, the foresters-all of them- have already made arrangements to show their loyalty and appreciation for 'their university. Seventeen law classes of the past in unbroken suc- cession, have also left class memori- als. Yes, and even the seniors of the local high school have decided to spend .a few dollars of "father's money" on their alma mater, rather than upon themselves. Lo, the poor, friendless, "immemori- al" laws! MORE CLEAN HANDS. The dream-university trained men and women will dream-of clean elec- tions, no vote, swapping, no "glad- hand" insincerity, and no vote bracing methods, has taken a deep and lasting hold upon the Michigan undergraduate.t Most encouraging! The Michigan Union started the re- form more than ten years ago. The cleaner methods have been effective, in spite of the sneers of the more "pra- tical" part of the student body. The student council attempted the system, but without the signal success thatf attended the Union. Then came the athletic association. For the last four years the various candidates have pledged themselves not to solicit votes, not to invade the campus with thef tricks of the outside game. And it has succeeded. The senior literary classes have followed suit. In a half-hearted and sporadic fashion the cleaner meth- ods have been attempted by othert classes. And now come the presidential can- didates of the women's league. They also would make their office a real honor, an office that is conferred, nott garnered. They would also leave the voter go, who must be pledged and dragged to the polls. They seek quali- ty, not quantity. Let those who will, laugh at Michi- gan's idealism, this so-called Utopia, that is so different from the "outside practical world methods." Let them sneer, if they will. They are losing' ground every day. They have cause to be disconsolate. In the meantime, the campus offices and campus officers, al- ready show the results of the newer and cleaner methods. SLOW PROGRESS MARKS WORK OF UNION BUILDING CAMPAIGN Slow but sure progress is marking the work of the Union building fund campaign in southern Michigan. Under the direction of Griffith Hayes, alumni committees are being formed in De- troit, Jackson, Battle Creek, Kalama- zoo and Grand Rapids. When these committees are finally arranged the word will be given, and a short active campaign for funds, lasting three or four days, will be ilaugurated. The whole of the southern part of the state will be covered before Commencement. After the completion of the Michi- gan work the campaign in the other states of the Union will be started.
