"SERVICE" )ur Watc hwvuord This year the architectural depart- ment, in contributing to the annual ex- hibition, will use the entire second story of the southwest wing, and the freehand drawing room on the fourth floor. Since drawing is the principal vehicle of architectural expression, and the transmission of the owner's ideas as worked out by the architect in plan and design, this exhibit will consist primarily of drawings. These will be arranged in such a way as to give the v isitors an idea of the successive steps leading from the first exercise to the thesis problem. The work of the elementary design squads will show applications of the theory in principles of design, and the unlimited possibilities of line, color and form. In the next two classes. elemen- tary' architecturdl forms, and the class-. ical orders pre introduced, and problems are given which illustrate their fun-c tional and decorative use. Many interesting examples of the st- dent's ability in practical building de- sign will be exhibited. These will in- clude working drawings, plans and de- tails of .residences and warehouses. Other important fields are those of the architectural history research plates, and the allied arts designs. The re- search plates are rendered studies from famous existing monuments, while the allied arts problems give an opportnity to apply previously gained knowledge in the desig-n of furniture. ceramics, tapes- tries and decorative paintings and sculptures Carried on at the same time with the above work, and extending throughout the four years, is f reehand drawing, numerous examples of which will be shown. Charcoal drawings from casts are the first made by the student after he has learned the principles of perspec- tive. From that he goes by successive stages to rendering in pencil, wash, water color, and pen and ink. In several instances, water color and pen andi ink designs of the same subject will be placed side by side for comparison of the different mediums. Drawings from i"fe will also be shown. The larger part of the exhibition of this department will be the design work of the sophomore, junior and senior years, where the problems deal with the design of small and large single build- ings, and extended schemes, such as group planning, monumental buildings. and important interiors. There will also be shown the advanced construction work, which consists of structural drawings for steel framed and reinforced concrete buildings. The majority of these designs are treated much as the same class of work in pro- fessional practice. All of these dis- plays wil1 be give the visitors some idea of the preparation given the arch- itectural student during is university li f#.- PREPARATIONS TO BUILD ARE BEGUN. Preliminary preparations for the erec- tion of the new science building were commenced last week when the soa around the old psychology building was removed. The front and rear parts of the building will be torn down at once, and the central part, which is used as a psychological laboratory, will be moved to the vacant ground west of the chem- istry building. The main entrances will be located on the north and east sides. Two smaller entrances will open onto the diagonal walk. G WATER HEAER EFFICIENCY is the motto 'of the Engineer.
