INEERS PLAN ANNUAL EXHIBIT On next Thursday and Friday, May 14 and >,, the second annual engineering exhibit will be held in the old and new engineering and the chemical building. Last year over io,ooo visitors viewed the displays shown in the various de- partments, during the three days they were open to the public. In an effort to beat this record, the commhittees in charge of this year's exhibit have pre- pared displays more varied and numer- ous than last year's. Every branch of engineering will have an individual .ex- hibit, showing the class of work done by .the students. In addition, a number of novel exhibits have been planned.. Visitors will be conducted through the building by student guides, who will also explain the different exhibits. The exhibition will be open to the public from early morning to i1:ou o'clock at night. Contrary to an earlier report, all classes in the engineering cte- partment will not be ismissed, only those classes with which the exhibit in- terferes being excused. Full sections of students will be working in the shops during the exhibit, and students from other sections are requested to be pres- ent and help swell the number of ma- chines in operation. All classes will re- sume Saturday mornng. CHEMISTS TO DEMONSTRATE UTILITY OF THEIR SCIENCE. Practical Application of Chemistry Will be Shown in Laboratories. In the chemistry building will be '3ari- ous exhibits showving the analytical. as well as the practical applications of chemistry. The - laboratories -will he open, showing the various operations in chenical analysis, organic synthesis. and research work. The various exhibits will include the furnaces for assaying, brickmaking, and heat treatment, as well as the electrical resistance and arc type furnaces. The means of measuring the high tempera- tures with thermo-couples, optical pyro- meters, and similar devices, will also be on exhibition. In addition to the above, a rotary ce- ment kiln will he seen in operation, to- gether with the various types of ore grinding and crushing machinery, and apparatus for measuring the tensile strength and expansion of cement and concrete. Exhibitions of Thermite welding will also be given, and it is planned to have a miniature salt plant in operation. using a vacuumni evaporator. Other things of interest to be shown will be the micro-metallurgy of iron and steel; the operation of a filter press; the different stages of varnish manufactur- ing; the varying finishes obtainable with the different kinds of varnish; moving pictures of numerous industries, and various other features. FORE$TERS PLAN VARIED EXHIBIT The forestry exhibit will be on a larger scale than last year, and many new features will be shown. The same general idea, however, will be followed, that of attempting to show what the United States in general, and the state of Michi an in particular. has in the wv of forests. The conditions which prevail in our timber laInds and what 'cielntitic forestry can do and is doing with them, will he dwelt upon. The exhiiiit as a whole will be made up of several small exhibits. each repre- sentative of some branch of forestry. One (displav will show a miniature forest nursery. properly laid out. 'Ihis same exhibit will show specimens of bark, conres seeds, seedlings. and wood sec- tions of several o( our most important trees. In the forest prodliicts exhibit will be shown a multitude of articles which are made from wood. demonstrating the im- portant part that trees play in our every- lay life, IHe;-re. also, will be seen speci- milens of lumber which have been treated with preservatives to prolong their na- "ural life. . , at,: e that is expected to attract much attention is a model constructed to show the effect of forests in preventing the erosion of thie soil. In contrast to this will be displayed a-miniature repre- sentation of a bare mountain slope. Electrical Department to Demonstrate Uses of Recent Inventions in This Field. WILL SEND WIRELESS FLASHES.. The electrical exhibit will be divided this year into the electrical and the physics department. The combination of these two will make an important feature of the engineering exhibition The electrical department will be sub- divided into five distinct exhibits, tele- phone and wireless, lighting, railroad signals, high tension transmission, elec- trical laboratory. In the telephone and telegraph labor- atories will be displayed various types of apparatus used in numerous phases of electrical communication,. such as the university private exchange, where one will see the latest types of the modern telephone office in operation. The auto- matic switchboard, illustrating the latest development of automatic telephony, will be shown. TJhe university s5-kilo- watt wireless station, which for the benefit of visitors will furnish free wire less service over a radius of goo miles, will be a feature. The lighting will be the most novel of all the exhibits. All kinds of electric lights will be displayed, from the oldest to the most recent kind. Certain booths will show the difference in the effect of the lamp, the carbon filament lamp, and the most efficient incandescent lamp, in commercial use today. The light effects of the diagonal walk and the engineer- ing arch will -be worth a visit in the evening. The electrical railroad to be exhibited will be a model of the direct current, third-rail type. There will be about 500 feet of track upon which will run a lo- comotive and trailer. The power will he supplied to the third ral by a motor- generator set up in the laboratory. Th machinery in the laboratory will be grouped to illustrate a central station plant and a sub-station. A working model of the automatic semaphore sig- nal system will be installed in connec- tion with the railroad. in the high tension display, there will be breakdown tests of all kinds of in- sulating materials, a short high tension single-phase line, to show the corona effects, and a horn gap for illustrating its use in lighting. The laboratory will contain all modern types of alternating and direct current gererators, together wth some of the latest rotary converters aid induction motors. These machines will be under commercial tests during the entire ex- hibit. Water representing rain will play upon the two areas, demonstrating the advis- ability of keeping our mountain slopes covered with timber. In the wood technology laboratory, tests to determine the comparative strength of wood, concrete, and steel, will be conducted on the testing ma- chines. Lectures on forestry, along popular lines, and illustrated with lantern slides, will be given continuously throughout the two days of the exhibit. The exhibit of the departnent f naval architecture and marine engi neet ing will consist of two parts-the draw- ing room and the naval tank. The draughting room exhibit will lie found in room 33, and vill consist of complete designs of cargo and passenger vessels, yachts, motorboats, marine engines, boil- ers, and propellers, prepared by the stu- dents. Models of different types of ships, illustrating stream line flow, will be on exhibition. In the room adjoining the naval tank the d(evelopinent of a paraffin wax model will be demonstrated, showing the cut- ting, shaping and finishing, preliminary to testing. Visitors will he allowed to ride on the car which spans the experi- mental tank, to observe the manner of conducting tests. The new propellor dynamometer which is soon to lie used to determine the thrust and torque of model propellors, may also be seen.
