ANN ARI

A very engaging program, drawn
largely from the composers of the ro-
mantic school, was given yesterday af-
ternoon by Mrs. George B. Rhead in
the last historical recital of the sea-
son.
The numbers presented a striking
contrast. The delicate, sparkling ser-
enity of the. Mozart, "Tema con varia-
zoni," was followed by two rich and
brilliant Liszt numbers.- The climax
of the program was reached in the
Grieg, G. minor Ballade,-Grieg's
greatest work for the pianoforte. With
its audacious dissonances supporting
grandly weird and haunting harmo-
nies, all demanding the greatest re-
sources of technique and temperament,
Mrs. Rhead's interpretation of it de-
serves the warmest praise.
San Carlo Opera Company
Mme. Edvige Vaccari, the distin-
guished colorature soprano of the San
Carlo Grand Opera Company, which
come to the Whitney theatre on Friday
and Saturday, April 24 and 25, has
been termed by the discriminating
critics of San Francisco, "The Little
Tetrazzini." Her voice is so clear and
sweet that it is said at times to take
on the peculiar quality of musical
glasses. She can soar to the dizziest
vocal heights without the slightest
falling away of her tones. Mme. Vac-
cari will sing the florid music allotted
to Lucy Ashton in "Lucia di Lammer-
moor," which will be given Friday
night. The Henry of the cast will be
Angelo Antola, a noted Italian bari-
tone.
