It is to the freshmen, that we would speak, you freshmen of the "Hullo" campaign-you freshmen before whom we bowed because of your originality, your appreciation of the new and the sane. The time for wearing the cap has come, the privilege will be-yours for only a few weeks more. The campus was but fairly sprinkled with the tra- ditional head-gear yesterday. It has been said that you were to make his- tory. The begining of such a career means the keeping alive by you, that of Michigan's past that is worthy of being kept alive. Why should we make monkeys of ourselves? Why should we allow oth- ers to make monkeys of us? All for "style?" Style has become a mania, an over- lord, a petty and ridiculous sovereign. We are at the mercy of its beck and call. We are comfortable or uncom- fortable, not according to our own con- science, but at the whim of style. We present ourselves+-not most becom- ingly to the world-or as we best see ourselves--but according to the dic- tates of style. Style is much like that monstrous bed of Og, we must fit into it, whether we be chopped off or stretched out, in the process. Skinney men, fat men, short men, long men, round men, square men-all sorts of men-must appear peaceful and contented in the same rig-up. We must laugh, when we would curse! Let us be anarchists! Let us wear what we please and be comfortable. Let us wear our soft shirts and col- lars-or no collars at all. Let us wear our vests, if we please. Let us wear a head gear that is downy, easy and restful; shoes, that are broad, healthy, that make the feet feel glad. A particular style has no more right to be universal than does a particular medicine or a particular food. If you would not drive us into anarchy be sympathetic with us and our large fol- lowing, in this matter. of style. As usual, his audience was large and appreciative. Particularly well liked on the program was a bit of "Madame Butterfly"-the intensely tragic finale to the(second act-which was played exquisitely. A march by Dubois and a Debat andante were also impressive. As an added unmber, Mr. Moore gave "Good Night" from Nevin's Venetian Suite. I and A.
