Burnett. l An important meeting of the busi- ness staff and tryouts at 4:00 o'clock. THE DILETANTE. There appears upon this campus stage of ours, a unique individual, a" type-the diletante. The less of him the better. The diletante is a loafer, a deliber- ate loafer. He is everlastingly irres-' ponsible. He has ability-that's tragic-which he dissipates upon his" university, its activities and its studies. He shirks, begs off, is careless, is not thorough-and always has excuses. Where is this twentieth century efici- ency of ours? Let us have none of him. FOUR YEARS OF LIFE. The world moves with ightning-like rapidity, dazzling, confusing and start- ling. We live a sixty year life in. the outside world, we live for four years at Michigan. There's Work to be done, if we are to do ourselves justice in the future that is to come, and in the pres- ent that is here with us. Let us be about it, without dallying, without ex- cuses, without shirking. WXe have four years in which to pre- pare for a sixty year or seventy year life. We have four years in which to° make our life-long friends, to remake university activities, to contribute our mite to the university's well-being, to1 make ourselves and our work worth while, and effective. We must also be- come educated. Let us not daly, we are too busy. There's work to be done. WHY JOKE THE POET? Why does the stage poke fun at the poet? Did you ever meet a real poet? Was his hair absurdly plastered overi his ears? Did he constantly carry with him a set of silly verse? Did he ever-1 lastingly jabber high sounding, bor- bastic, unpractica1 and meaningless phrases? The poet-not the fraud-is the man. He tells us what our lives mean, why we work, and explains the results of our work. Without him, we would grope about as do the beasts of the fields. We would exist, not live We would see and hear, not understand. We would :fear, not love. Whmy caricature the poet? Why poke fun at our superman? CAMPU SMILES Self-made men bear marks~ of f the reator.-WJenley. We hate to start a controversy so near to Easter, but our professional honer drives us to it. A certain per- sonage, high up in the English depart- ment of this university, passed the opinion that the general run of this col was good but that the METER of the verse was excrutiating. Below is printed the latest spasm of the poet laureatte of England. Compart the meter of this to the productions of the col poet, and send your opinions to the English faculty. We demand justice: "Ye recall me a time sixty summers ago, When, a young chubby chap, I sat just so With others on a school-form rank'd in a row, Not less eager and hungry than you, I trove, With intelligence agape. and eyes aglow, While an authoritative old wiseacre Stood over us and from a desk fed us with flies." --0- WOMEN ARE~ SUBPOENAED TO ATTEND SENIOR LAW DANCE --Yesterday's headline. Some ladies' men, these laws -0-.. The women have kept the name of their junior play a secret for the past eight weeks. All of which goes to disprove an an- cient theory. Smiles: It seems that the only pleas- ure that a phone girl gets out of life is to say "Line's busy" or "Out of or- der!"--M. L. T. Smiles: A child's eyesight was re- stored him in Baltimore, by grafting upon his eyeball the cornea of a pig. But who wants to view the world thru the eyes of a pig ?-J. Katosh.
