LUNDGREN STARTS
REAL BASE WORK
Regulars Linelb at.Infieldnositions
For First Instruction in
Inside Ball
1)A4YON ARTISTS RUN RELAYS
Making and breaking double steals
was the feature of yesterday's base-
ball practice, the work being the first
taste of inside ball which the coach
has introduced.
The addition of baserunners on the
paths and a pitcher in the box, made
the infield practice the fastest of the
season. The veterans were at all the
infield stations, Howard, McQueen, Ba-
ker, and Hughitt, evidently still having
an edge over the youngsters in the
coach's mind. Hippler worked at the
plate, with Davidson in the box.
All the infielders except Shivel, who
is on the hospital list with an abscess
in his neck, were given a workout. The
second string lined up as follows:
Dwyer, 1b; Graham, 2b; Robinson, ss;
Labodie, 3b; and Benton, c.
Relay races were also added to the
training program yesterday, by Lund-
gren. Each man ran one lap, but the
coach has promised to make them do
two laps before the week is out.
We offer no apology for our Michi-
gan spirit. Look into every line of cam-
pus activities, and you will find that
this law class has contributed loyally
and generously to Michigan, and every
man of them is as loyal today, and
will ever be, although the present mo-
ment be dimmed by this unwarranted
attack. And by the way, Mr. Editor,
let us bear in mind that there is such
a thing as loyalty to one's class, and
one who did not show enough interest
to attend that meeting, or any other
meeting ought not to be. too severe on
those who did attend. Furthermore, if
you were anxious for a memorial, you
could have secured it by working qui-
etly with the members of your class.
I It is no excuse to your classmates that
you must ever and always have a vic-
tim at hand to sacrifice on the altar
of The Daily.
Let me say also to that Old Gradu-
ate, who. by the way failed to show the
I strength of his convictions by signing
the article, that he does not know the
facts, or is purposely conveying a
false impression. As I understand it,
last year, and last year only, not "in
recent years," did the memorial take
the form of a *loan fund. We agree
with him "that more men in this class
have been helped from this loan fund,
than in any other class in recent
years." How could it be otherwise?
Since the fund was only given last
year, this was the first class to whom
it was ever open. We also learn from

that communication that the class that
is so unfortunate as to borrow from
such a fund may have the pleasure of
being reminded of it in public on any
occasion.
If a class contribution to this fund is
demanded at the price of holding it
up to public criticism, would it not be
better to end all future trouble by
increasing our tuition, and taking it
out of that. The payment of one is
no more compulsory than the other.
Why misname it a memorial? The fact
is, that if The Daily had known its
proper sphere, and stayed in it, we
would have had a memorial in its true
sense. It may, or it may not have
taken the form of a contribution to the
fund. We ask the alumni and the men
on the campus to look into both sides
of the question, find out the facts,
imagine yourselves for a moment in
the position of the law class. Then
judge us. We welcome your verdict.
