SATURDAY MARCH 14, 1914.
LANDLADIES AND STUDENTS.
Hardly a day passes without the re-
cording of some petty, childish disa-
greement between landladies and stu-
dents. Not infrequently the matters
end in the courts, with a lot of unnec-
essary publicity for both parties and
the university. We have some landla-
dies who gloat over legal notoriety.
We know of one obstreperous individ-
ual, who has had nine suits. But this
is the sorry exception. The average
landlady does not care to advertise
herself through the courts. The same
can be said of the student.
You say a little sanity, a little self-
control, would be a panacea. It would
he, but experience teaches us, that san-
ity is a rare virtue.

A SUGGESTION.
Professor M. P. Tilley has suggested
an admirable remedy for the settle-
ment of petty disputes between land-
ladies and students. The scheme fa-
vors the appointment of a small com-
mittee to act as a court for the disput-
ants.
We believe that such a committee
would serve an ideal purpose. If ap-
pointed by the proper officials and
with proper care, a general feeling of
trust could be created in the students
and in the landladies. An almost per-
fect justice could be dealt out, with
less expense and less publicity for all
the parties concerned. The committee
would prevent some of the court cases,
and that alone would make it worth
while.
The plan would be worth trying.
IT WILL COME BACK.
We heaved a mighty sigh of relief
when we heard of the discovery of the
Ypsilanti girl in the Grand Rapids
Y. W. C. A. It proved an innotent af-
fair, after all.
But we shall hear from the two
column displays regarding the search-
ing of the university fraternities in
the Thursday evening Detroit. papers
again. Mark our word!
Some one in the future will rise up
in righteous wrath to attack our social
system. Some .one with a garbled
brain will use the incident of 1914,
"when a girl was enticed to an iniqui-
tous Ann Arbor" as proof. A hurried
glance at the headlines of a sensation-
al story is sufficient to inseparably
connect the university with the unhap-
py affair.
We shall hear from it again, embel-
lished with misunderstandings and ha-
zy impressions. We hardly know
whether to blame the reader or the
newspaper.
Shall the newspaper not print such
far-fetched sensationalisms or shall
the reader be educated to be more
careful, more just to the newspapers
and the institutions and persons that
they involve?

Japanese Student Becomes a Father
K. Y. Wang, '16, became the father
of a daughter last Monday. The baby
is given the name Ann. Mrs. Wang
was born in Tdkio, Japan. This is the
second time that a foreign student be-
came the father of a child while in the
university, since a son was born to Mr.
and Mrs. L. K. Kao, '12, last autumn.
