WOMEN CONTINUE
GOVERNING PLANS
Problems pertaining to the definite
formulation of a system of self-gov-
erment for women, were discussed by
the self-government committees and
a number of representative university
women, at a round-table conference
held yesterday afternoon under the
supervision of Miss Edna Tuner, '12,
former president of the women's
league, The chief question considered
was that of the power and position to
be accorded to the head of the self-
governing 'body; whether she should
be the elected charman of a standing
committee of the women's league,
such as the athletic committee, or
whether the president of the league,
and tho chief officer in self-govern-
ment, should be one and the same per-
sop.. Opinions were divided.
Other questions, considered were:
whether the dean of women should be
empowered to sit, without a vote, upon
the self-government board, for ad-
visory purposes in times of doubt, over
matters that may fall outside thejur-
isdiction of self-government; whether
the members of the judiciary board
shall all be chosen from the league
board; and under new conditions
which will arise, what new powers,
if any shall be vested in the' vice-
president of the league.
,A serious problem which will arise
in the establishment of self-govern-
men is the posibility -of the growing
up of a second strong organization
which might in a measure supplant
the( league. To avoid this, it is neces-
sary tf1 coordinate the new movement

"You may be inclined to scoff at this
as too far-fetched an indictment
against the innocent-looking little
white cigarette. But facts are facts,
and chemists tell us that furfural, the
principal "aldehyde" in cigarettes is
fifty times as poisonous as ordinary
alcohol. It is far more dangerous than
the nicotine poison of the pipe or ci-
gar. A single cigarette °yelds as
.much furfural as is present in a coup-
le of fluid ounces of whiskey.

in the United States, you get some idea
of the damage being done to the nerves
of young America.
",Japan has seen the danger before
America or 1,1ngland. Twelve years
ago cigarette-smoking was more prev-
alent in the Orien~t than in America;
but in 1900 Japan passed a law pro-
hibiting" the use of cigarettes by boys
under .2t. Representative Nemoto in
introducing this bill said., Recently
ven the children in 'our, common
schools have come to. smoke cheap Im-
ported cigarettes, the consequence of
which, we fear, may bring our coun-
try down to the iserable conditions
of China or India. If we eypect to
make this nation superior to America
and En-glanid, -we must not allow our
youth, who are to be the future fathers
and mothers" of Japan, to degenerate
through this poison,"
"kAnd just so surely as American and
European boys-and young men go on
smoking cigarettes and Japanese boys
do not, will not Japan become the su-
perior?
