Maurice Toulme...........Managing Editor Adna Johnson ............Business Manager WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11, 1914. YE ROMEOS! An occasional midnight serenade has a romantic appeal that is altogether pleasing. But six successive sere- nades performed by the same stal- warts to the same enforced audience is an affliction. This persistent disturbance of the peoples' peace amounts to pure "cus- sedness." In this particular case the serenaders are unwittingly committing a cruelty. MR. WILLIAM A. HOWLAND. It is with genuine and profound re- gret that we contemplate the resig- nation of Mr. William A. Howland of the school of music. The influence of his leadership in university musical activities, his interest in student life, and direction of its principal musical organizations, have stamped him as a Michigan man, who has had the wel- fare of the university at heart. We know musicians who are obnox- ious because of their bigotries, jeal- ousies, or idosyncrasies. In Mr. How- land we have a musician devoid of all affectation. Not only is he a musician, who has had especial success in teach- ing, and who is an artist of rare at- tainments, but primarily a man, whom to meet is a positive delight. In the fourteen years of his career in Ann Arbor, he has been regarded as one of the most stimulating artistic and cultural assets of its musical life. But his art has been comprehensive enough to include the standpoint of amateur musicianship. Under his ef- ficient direction, the glee club has de- veloped to its present degree of per- fection, and the choruses of most of the Union operas been trained. We admire Mr. Howland for his splendid, wholesome, personal quali- ties, combined with his discriminating ideals of musicianship and artistic endeavor. The winners of events at the wom- en's track meet Saturday evening were presented with varsity Mbroldered handkerchiefs. A new gym record was hung up in the peanut race, 319 nuts in 10 min- utes. The last heat was so hotly con- tested that some of the nuts were roasted. Another record breaking mark was not allowed. This was in the rope skipping race, in which the winner skipped a semi-final heat. -0- Miss Merrick Probably Knows the Game! (Notice in Wash. Daily.) NOTICE-Makeup classes for wom- en. Gym.
