Cater- ing to the evil in men's minds is dis- gusting. The odious story, the sug- gestive novel, the common play are all wrong. And when this is brought home to us in an attempt to over-es- timate the evil in our own minds by putting indecent acts on the boards, we balk. The Michigan man is no seraph, but he is clean. Don't make the mistake of trying to appeal to him with the suggestive. Indecency on the stage may find low-minded approval in city burlesque, but we are a com- munity of college men. And women. We respect our women. The natural chivalry, innate in the gentleman re- volts at this commercialization' of in- decency. We will not stand for hay- ing our own minds misunderstood. We are clean minded. Don't forget that! WHAT THE PUBLIC WANTS! Does smut pay? Can the "yellow" journal, the suggestive writer, the low- minded story teller, or the common play succeed? Never, from a moral standpoint. We have everyday examples of the appar- ent economic success. It is apparent only, unstable, temporary, a bubble, a local whim, a success for the moment only. There are those who say the public wants the immoral show, the indecent story, the libelous newspaper. Bah! We refuse to subscribe to such. It's the cheapest of excuses. The man who peddles smut does so at his peril. His appeal is narrow, purely a class appeal, to begin with. The clean man and woman will be blinded by the tinsel for the moment only. The class he interests is a fick- le class, a dangerous class, a class without loyalty, without friendliness, without "good will." And what is a business without "good will"? Indecency does not pay--financially or morally. At heart society is clean. Bathroom Comedy. Doc: Somebody's been using my ette. Dutch: How do you know? Doc: It's clean. From the Legal Funnibone, Item in the Brownville Clarion: A. J. Trover caught a 19 pound pickerel yesterday. Query: Does Trover lie? -S.S.D. Vous Avez Ralson, J. S.! "Even the cold weather," writes J. S., "is a blessing in disguise. One sees less of these campus personages on bicycles." --- Many a man thought he had a home made, until the invite to the topsy tur- vy dance didn't materialize. Well, women are naturally shy.
