Suit case labels are the unhappy tes- timonials of a by-gone age; an age when the "colleger," the absurdly exag- gerated peg-topped trousers, the post- age stamp head gear and other college rah-rahisms enjoyed wide popularity, to the disadvantage and malignment of the real purposes of higher educa- tional advantages. The man who blatantly and boast- fully advertises his associations to the world, shows wretchedly poor judg- ment. The finer sensibilities of an ed- ucated atmosphere revolt at obstrus- ive methods. A Michigan man has good cause to be proud. But Michigan would rather be advertised by the superiority of the man himself than by a plastered suit' case. The Michigan Union button distin- guishes the wearer sufficiently and, at the same time, is a fitting adver- tisement. THE PEACE CONTEST. For several years the university Peace oratorical contest has been growing in interest and importance. Michigan owes to her speakers of this evening- a large and attentive audi- ence. More and more the public is looking to the university to sanely discuss and solve the great problems of our social: situation. Certainly no problem de- serves more intelligent and continued discussion than the problem of war. MUSIC AND DRA)IIA. Faculty Concert. STATE STRET I...A During the Christmas vacation the committee on self-government will work with Mrs. F. N. Scott of the local assceiation of collegiate alumnae, in formulating a set of house rules to be submitted to the various women's house clubs as a standard system of regulations. They may be adopted or not at the discretion of each group. According to the leaders of this movement the suggestions have not been started with any intention of forcing restrictions upon the women students, but simply to place before all a uniform system for group gov- ernoent. The adoption of such a sys- tem would anticipate the action of as well as aid the committee on house- clubs, which in 1915 will make anoth- er such investigation into rules and conditions as was made in the early part of this year. It is hoped also that these rules will form a basis for the system which must of necessity be formulated when the new residence F.. ,s A "., I SMOOTHEST All the cornforts-- When good fellowvs get together- then Velvet is supreme This su- perb leaf has hung i the warehouse over two years-a tremendous change-all harshness is nullified- the leaf grows rich-remarkably smooth-and in the pipe, Ye gods! what a smoke! "I wish all the women could realize that this movement is one of the most important that Michigan women have ever participated in, and that to con- tribute to the fund is helping toward a great cause. Fifty cents is not too much for anyone, and as there are, about eight hundred women, the ag- gregate would help materially." Treas- urers will be appointed from the vari- ous classes to take charge of the con- tributions. About thirty members of the Girl's Glee club are planning a trip to Jack- son at an early date, where they expect to give a concert under the auspices of the Ladies' Tourist club.
