A HOPE.
Last year, or was it year before last,
a Michigan sorority set aside a few
moments of its time, a few pennies of
its dollars and invited a host of
wretchedly unhappy little kiddies, kid-
dies from the clinics, kiddies from lo-
cal poor families, to a Christmas tree.
To many, it was a first Christmas, to
as many more it was the last, unless
the women's league will become the
fairy god-mother of another such day.
REWARD.
To James Craig, Georce C. Paterson,
Miller H. Pontius, and Ernest F. Hugh-
itt, The Michigan Daily extends its
heartiest congratulations on their se-
lection by Walter Camp for places and
honorable mention on his all-american
footbll elevens. Some were undoubt-
edly disappointed.
These may be partially consoled by
the undoubted truth that this eastern
critic, conceded to be the greatest of
all, is not infallible.
A SCOOP.
The Michigan Daily will probably
scoop the college dailies of the country
this morning on Camp's all-american
teams, the biggest athletic story of the
season.
The scoop was made possible by the
fine courtesy of Mr. Johnson of The
Daily Times News. Other kindnesses
extended by Mrs. L. M. Cramer make
it a pleasant duty to give formal
thanks.
The kindly interest and coope-ation
is thoroughly appreciated.
CAMPUS TN BRIEF.
-Fresh dents will hold a dance at
8:30 o'clock tomorrow night at the
Union,
-Fresh engineers will give the first
of a series of four dinners at 5:00
o'clock tomorrow night at the Union.
Prof. H. E. Riggs, James Raynsford,
'15E, R. H. Torbett, '14, and G. C. Pat-
terson, '14E, comprise the list of speak-
ers. A class orchestra and glee club
club will furnish the music for the
occasion. Admission will be 65 cents.
Tickets for the entire series can be
obtained for two dollars.
-"The Thumb club," which Is being
organized to boost the University of
Michigan in the thumb district of
Michigan, will hold a meeting at the
Union at 7:00 o'clock tomorrow even-
ing.
-Chinese students of the university
will be entertained by the Y. M. C. A.
at a tea to be given at Newberry hall
from 6:15 to 6:30 o'clock this after-
noon. President H. C. King, of Oberlin
College, and President Harry BHutch-
ins will be the guests of honor.
-Gordon C. Eldredge, '14, has charge
of the distribution of the tickets to fra-
ternity men, for the productions of the
Disraeli company, under the auspices
of the Drama league.

AT EPISCOPAL CHURCH TODAY
Rev. Dr. Herbert Symonds, dean of
Christ Church Cathedral, the
foremost preacher of Montreal,
and prominently mentioned for
the presidency of the Western
University, now in process of or-
ganization at London, Ontario, will
lecture on "The Influence of Modern
Thought Upon Christianity,' at the
10:30 o'clock service at the Episcopal
church this morning.
Dr. Symonds is familiar with stu-
dents and student life. Many McGill
university students are regular attend-
ants at his church in Montreal, and be-'
fore going to Montreal he was head
of Trinity College, one of the great
Canadian schools.

Miss Helen Bennett, manager of the
collegiate occupational bureau of Chi-
cago, which was formed for the pur-
pose of finding vocations, other than
teaching for women, of university
training, will speak at Newberry hall,
at 4:30 o'clock, this afternoon. Miss
Bennett is widely known in college
circles all over the country, and her
present work is of especial interest
to Michigan women, since the Chicago
bureau has secured positions for so
many Michigan alumnae.
There will be a round table confer-
ence tomorrow morning, at 11:00
o'clock, in Newberry hall, at which
women may consult with Miss Bennett
in regard to particular lines of work.
Appointments at other hours may. be
made through Miss Margaret Eaton,
president of the Y. W. C. A.
About 50 junior women attended the
first of the series of luncheons given
for them at the Michigan Union yes-
terday noon.: There were no toasts,
but short speeches on matters of inter-
est to the class, were given by Dr.
Elsie Pratt, women's physician, Helen
Clark, Mary Lewis, and Vera Burridge.
The second luncheon in the series will
be held on February 21, and will be
in the nature of a Washington's birth-
day entertainment.
