Fancy the feelings of fair Betty, when she comes down to the depot to meet her Billy, home from college, and encounters a strange individual, smiling behind the black disguise of nineteen carefully nourished hairs, on the erstwhile smooth lawn of his up- per lip! If you must carry something horri- ble home, to show that you have been to college, take a blue book, a superi- or air or just a picture of the hirsute, with yourself in the background. Approximately, there are six times as many men in the university as there are women. A girl, perhaps unnoticed in her na- tive community, is suddenly plunged into a social maelstrom. For four fleeting years, she enjoys the society of the collegian; the society of the edu- cated, refined university atmosphere. The environment grows upon her. She comes to like the culture and accurate, nice manners of her adopted surround- ings. Finally, the ways of the cultur- ed become a part of her. The rough, rather mannerisms of the native swains irritate and disgust her. The girl has outgrown Countryton, Countryton's men and Countryton's ways. Shall she sneer at Countryton? Shall she hold aloof from Countryton? Education creates unrest. Educa- tion should also stimulate sympathy and charity. 209 E. We are considerably concerned over the attitude expressed by the freshmen, regarding the advisory system. We are far from convinced, however that the attempt to aid the freshmen has been in vain. Improvements can be made and im- provements will be made next year. Steps will be taken to give the fresh- men more attention at the beginning of the year when they really need it and the general system will be corrected as the faults are discovered. It is also to be remembered that several months still elapse in which to help the freshmen. After all, as much depends upon the freshmen as the sen- ior. That the system has not been all that was expected of it in its first few months, is no real cause for discour- agement. Michigan is lucky to have the oppor- tunity to correct the mistakes early. A RAZOR, PLEASE. When the home bound trains drop mas vacation have been made. Ab- sences on the above days will count as three regular absences and will effect the standing of the violator. Ex- cuses for failure of attendance must be made to the absence committee be- fore vacation, as no excuses will be accepted afterwards. -The third round of the Union bridge tournament will be played tonight at the Union, the occasion of the reg- ular weekly Lounger. About 25 coup- les have played in the tournament thus far and any others who desire may begin tonight, without being han- dicapped, inasmuch as the scoring is to be done on the basis of averages. -Freshmen engineers will hold their first dinner of the year Monday evening at the Michigan Union. The banquet is in the nature of a "get-together" meeting. MUSIC AND DRAMA. Presents Classic Program. Classic composers were splendidly represented on the program that Hen- ry Dotterweich, a popular member of the school of music faculty, offered last night in Frieze Memorial hall. The recital, classed under the head of mis- cellaneous faculty concerts, was thor- oughly appreciated by a large audi- ence. Mr. Dotterweich marked his playing with broad and sure technique. Such satisfactory interpretations of Bee- thoven, Schumann, Mozart, Chopin, and Liszt leave little to say that is not superfluous. The Schumann Carnival, in particular, with its ever-changing melody, was a model of tonal beauty. Polish your floors with Old English Floor Wax. Major & Co. cod Christmas.
