Leier FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1913. Night Editor-Y. F. Jabin Hsu. WOMAN. What shall she be? The newer fem- inism has not yet determined this problem for us, nor has it completely overthrown the time worn sentimen- tality about the gentleness and effem- inacy of woman. In the meantime while female influ- ence is in the ascendant at our univer- sity-as in all other progressive in- stitutions-while we bear manfully all such troublesome discussions and look for an ultimate and permanent good, let us not be forced to look too much upon this denouement and be at times offended by the "pal like" atti- tude of young women who effect the blase sophistication, of "men of the world." GET A SHIRT. Freshman gym classes are in full swing, and once more the perennial gym shirt decorated with its prep school emblem is displayed before our admiring eyes. The floor of the gym reminds one of Ferry field on the day of the Interscholastic. Friend freshman with the emblaz- oned shirt you wear so proudly, if you really earned that letter by your ath- letic prowess, demonstrate it to us by earning something here. Win your numerals, win a C. C. C., win an "R," win anything that means you have done something at Michigan, and un- til that time comes, just wear a plain undecorated shirt. TALK MICH IGAN. The first leg of the yoyage is almost ended; the lights in the Harbor of, Vacation are gleaming ahead and near. Already we are planning the time we shall spend on shore. There will be dances, parties, and reunions. In your reunions and your gather- ings, talk Michigan. To the freshmen, particularly, this first vacation will come as a splendid opportunity to do their university a service. You will meet friends who are still in high * * * The first of a series of three lunch- eons for senior women will be held at the Michigan Union tomorrow at 12:15 o'clock. Miss Helen Loman will act as toastmistress, and the luncheon will be followed by dancing. Tickets are on sale at 50 cents each, or $1.20 for the series, by the mem- bers of the social committee: Misses Emma heath, l3eatrice Merriam, Ellen Riggs, Jessie Cameron, Ilda Jennings, and Louise Robson. * * - Dr. Elsie Pratt, women's physician, is preparing a series of lectures to be delivered to women students during the second semester. A detailed ac- count of these lectures will be given at an early date. * * * As Barbour gymnasium will be in the hands of the decorating committee for the freshman spread, there will b;, no league party this afternoon. Omega Phi will meet at 4:00 o'clock this afternoon at the Alpha Phi house. INTERCOLLEGIATE CHICAGO, Dec. 4.-Special-Fifty freshmen were chosen for initiation into the Three-Quarters club at the University of Chicago this year as compared with 48 in 1912. The pres- ent number represents each of the 18 national fraternities at Chicago with at least two men, while by the Inew rules 18 additional members are selected from the candidates regard- less of Greek letter connections. This made possible the admission of two non-fraternity men for the first time in the history of the club. The winter quarter at Chicago will open January 5 instead of the preced- ing Friday as originally scheduled. A reception last Monday afternoon in honor of Mr. La Verne W. Noyes donor of the new women's gymnasium was attended by one thousand women of the university. Mr. Noyes in speak- ing to the gathering declared that he was fully repaid by this one demon- stration. The site of the gym over- looking the Midway was definitely an- nounced at this reception. Cooperation of the student body is %ought by the Reynolds club to aid in securing the 1,0(B volumes neces- sary to open the proposed men's li- brary. It is desired to raise a fund of $800 by small subscriptions upon the campus. The remaining $200 has been iledged by the club.
