We take it that it is the province of an outside sporting page to comment on a university election in a spirit of fairness to all. night riots, are the very men who ,dis- graced Michigan last year at the junior hop riot. And right here, be it known The Michigan Daily is out to get these men, first to educate these men, then to see them out of this university un- less they take heed. We have our hopes 'for the future. But first we must show the world that Michigan will not tolerate these goril- ]as, under the title of Michigan stu- dents. They are not Michigan stu- dents, they are ordinary criminals who have paid a small fee to enter the uni- versity. They are Michigan's worst enemies. Then the author goes ahead to work up a great web of hate,' of jealousy, of secret machination, of soul selling. But, we at Michigan, have known the men accused, for years. We have come to look upon them with a respect amounting to faith. We have never heard them accused before. We do not now hear them accused upon a basis of fact. Everything is hinged upon possibilities, what this man might have done, had he been a man of the blackest character, had he been re- vengeful, had he harbored a grudge. Captain Paterson has denied the charges, the others have denied them. We ' believe these men, strangely enough. We believe these men because of their past services, we believe them because it is a fundamental maxim of English law, that a man is innocent until proven guilty.. , -4 to Go for Lu'nch isy Bee, Lunch Before that 8 o'clock joy into the hearts of these "wops"; it only afforded them an excuse to practice their devilish crimes. Else why the junior hop riots of last year? So we say, punish the guilty, if they O~n be found, and l~unish them se- verely. hPunish them for Michigan's future, punish them for their own ul- timate good, punish them for the effect that it will have on their followers. If this will be done, there will be no more riots. Michigan will have a big organized celebration. Michigan will not 'have to be continually explaining to the world. THE BLUECOATS. Mr. Policeman won't you please get the right men for us in the next riot, won't you get the leaders, won't you get the men, who are rushing you, the men who are doing the agitating?t The leader is the man to "get." Mr. Policeman may we suggest that these student rioters are far from being brave men. May we remind you of the one lone man who held one hundred of them at bay last spring, with a piece of lead pipe as a weapon. If you can only "billie" the leader, the followers will scatter like sheep. OUR SPANKING. A local scribe took a friendly little swipe at us on Saturday. The Varsity Fathers had just given us a left-hand- ed spanking, then turned us loose with some specific advice. We got it. A few hours afterwards, it was our great pleasure to see a certain game; a certain powerful opponent from the east was getting theirs. It was much harder than ours. Then the final whis- tle blew. We mixed with the crowd, we pushed, we squirmed and we fought our way through the masses. Then we met the "Wuxtra," we had only gone four blocks. Later, we had a talk with some of the 'Regents. We found that we had committed no crime. We found that we disagreed with them only on conclu- sions. The spanking was left-handed. We have agreed with ourselves that this is not such an unlivable old world, after all. UNiVERSITY :NOTICES. Meeting of the freshman law class today at 4:00 o'clock in room C. These leaders' are Michigan students and Michigan should stand behind her students," The Autocrat at The Break. fast Table. We heard it and you have heard it, and our reply is forthcoming. The Michigan Daily' believes heartily in a redblooded university and in a red- blooded celebration when our univer- sity wins a redblooded victory. But we are not criminals, we are not cow- ards, and we have a deep love for the good name of our university. We believe that Michigan has about one hundred savages in its cosmopoli- tan student body.
