L.eo ard h ieser sIntSortgEditor finish the biggest question of the day. Ultra-conservatives held up their 'hands in horror, when we opened up the Conference question. And in jus- tice to them, it did prove a tartar. We did secure the student opinion,j the alumni and the faculty, partially. One alumnus has said, we have accom- plished nothing. We doubt this thor- oughly. If democracy is to be any- thing besides a theory, we must put it to some use. UIVERSITY NOTICES. The judges of the voting on the de- sirability of Michigan's return to the onference were assisted by Clarence Lehr, Buell McCash, Herbert Muckley, and T. Hawley Tapping, who served as tellers. NO ALIBI. The Michigan Daily has no alibi offer. We took the pro-Conference side because we believed. that it was to Michigan's best interests to ally herself with her nine sister universi- ties. President Wilson, several years ago, pointed to the mid-western universi- ties of the future. It was on this broad basis that we sought a reentrance to the Conference. We must confess that there are some things about the present Con- ference that aggravate us extremely. It was our conviction that Michigan could best make conditions livable by a reentrance. But public opinion de- crees otherwise.'r We bow before this public opinion. We will not now, nor did we ever, at- tempt to foist our views upon.you. From the first we divided equally with you. Some of you have seen fit to break away and throw the public into confusion. We are unable to tell how effective you were. Our opinion is only argumentative, everything de- vends upon the credence that the gen- eral public gives. Our convictions stand. Our curios- ity has been satisfied, and yours also. For seven years such a vote has been contemplated. We were either wise enough or foolish enough to under- take the campaign. We fought fairly, we fought issues and we fought with arguments. For three days starting tonight; with matinee Friday and Saturday, Boyle Woolfolk's celebrated "Petticoat Min- stels" will be presented at the Whit- ney theatre. With girls providing most of the entertainment (men appear only as contrast), this production is a decided innovation in minstrelsy. A musical absurdity, entitled "The I1-- lusionist," featuring eight attractive girls, will head the show, with John P. Reed and Clarence Marks, late of George Evans' "Honey Boy" Minstrels, as an added attraction. TEACHERS LAUD UNIVERSITY HOSPITALITY AT CONVENTION The following letter was received by President Harry B. Hutchins from Mr. S. O. Hartwell, president of the Mich- gan State Teachers association, yes- terday, President Harry B. Hutchins, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich. Personally and in behalf of the offi- cers of the State Association, I want to thank you again, and through you, the members of your local committee and the citizens of Ann Arbor who helped to make our State Teachers' Convention the success which I think we can all agree that it was. The cordial reception of the univer- sity and the town was very much ap- preciated by all the members and the local arrangements were in as good condition as they have ever been. Cit- ies that may entertain the association will find it a decided task to keep up the standard you have set. Very truly yours, S. 0.
