We are always pleased when we learn that some department in the university is having an influence in practical life. We are particularly pleased to find that our department of philosophy is extending its influence outside the classroom, and that' the ethical doctrines there promulgated are being put into practice in every day life. We had often heard it an- nounced in Philosophy 1, that the de- partment in which we are being pre- sented three hour's credit was "quite some" department as far as influence went, but we never clearly realized just how all-pervading this influence was, until we witnessed the effect of the Categorical Imperative on the uni- the idle would be stimulated to indus- try, and stumbling blocks would be removed from the road of those who are already overburdened with work, thus bringing about a state of affairs which would redound greatly to the credit of our university and have the best results for the moral well-being of the students. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ALL SENIOR SING TUESDAY * * JUNE 6 ON STEPS OF MEMO- * * RIAL HALL. * * * * SENIOR LIT SING EVERY * * THURSDAY NIGHT AT SEVEN * * O'CLOCK, TAPPAN OAK. * * SENIOR ENGINEER ING EV- * ERY TUESDAY AND THURS- * * DAY NIGHT AT SEVEN * * O'CLOCK, ,ENGINEERING * * BENCHES. * * SENIOR LAW SING EVERY : * TUESDAY NIGHT AT SEVEN * * O'CLOCK ON STEPS OF LAW * * BUILDING. * * w * * * *w* * * w * * * * EXPLANATORY LETTERS SENT OUT REGARDING CELEBRATION University Officials Plan to Meet In- vited Delegates at Trains On Arrival. Supplementary letters giving par- ticulars of the Anniversary celebra- tion have been sent to all colleges and universities which have been invited to send delegates here this June. In the letters Chairman Effinger of the Executive committee requests that all delegates be in Ann Arbor by Tuesday, June 25, as the committee plans to meet the delegates at the trains, notice is requested of the time of arrival. Delegates as well as alumni are ex- pected to register as soon as possible after arrival, at the Alumni Room in Memorial hall. Mail and telegrams can be sent to the alumni room and will be delivered to the registered rep- resentatives and visitors. In order that the guests may meet one another and the members of the faculties, the University club has ar- ranged for a smoker in Memorial hall, Tuesday evening, June 25. FIVE MEN INITIATED INTO THE MYSTERIES OF ALCHEMY Amid the fumes of isobalearic acid and other kindred odors and smells, five chemical engineers were introduc- ed into the mysteries of "Alchemists," the chemical honorary society, Thurs- day night. The neophytes taken in were James Craig, '14 E, Austin Irvine; '14 E, Joseph Bogue, '14 E, George Wiley, '14 E, and L. C. Brown, '13 E. PROFESSORS RETURN FROM SCHOOL INSPECTION TOUR, Prof. W. B. Ford of the mathemat- ics department has been in the north- ern part of the state on a tour of school inspection during the first part of this week. He has visited the schools in West Branch, Gaylord, Grayling, Cheboygan, and Onaway. He will return this -evening. Assistant Professor A. R. But we feel quite certain that even the sweep of the Hegelian dialer- tic would never be able to reconcile such contradictions as are manifested by putting Boccaccio's stupid and comparatively harmless "Decameron" and the valuable scientific works of Havelock Ellis under lock and key, while Rabelais, the "Heptameron" of Margaret of Navarre, and the works of Crebillon are permitted to run at large without even so much as a muz- zle or a collar and tag. Moreover, so far as we have been able to discover in listening to the discourses of the philosophers, more good could probably be accomplished in other ways by keeping away from us the vulgarities which we have to allow for in writers whose standards of conventional morality are not the same as ours. We would suggest that it might be a good idea to permit the books which have a real literary or scientific value to be accessible to those who wish to profit by them, while it would be a happy stroke of genius to put the works of Richard Harding Davis, and others of his school, under lock and key so that the less frantic seekers for knowledge would have to get out and ,hustle for permission to read them., In this way F !
