It is an editorial pleasure to con- gratulate the management of the Michiganensian on the early ap- pearance of the year book. For the step in advance that their in~- dustry and ability has accomplished they are deserving of the heartiest support. The annual has already be- come a familiar friend at a time when in previous years we have speculated as to its prospective appearance. Not only has it come sooner than ever be- fore but there is more of it and the high standard of quality set in the books of 1910 and 1911 has been main- tained. We trust that this valued store- house of collegiate memories may con- tinue to fall into able hands and grow and prosper accordingly. By Way of Appreciation. The action of seniors discountenanc- ing popular airs at their class sings, in favor of Michigan songs, is grati- fying. "A place for everything, and everything in its place" applies with equal force to aesthetics, as in the more homely world of practical af- fairs. There are hymns and stein songs; love lyrics and dirges; chants and paens. No one would think of confounding the province of any of these. There are, however, some say, songs of general utility, appropriate for any occasion. This very popular music they cite as an instance of that class. According to their claims, it is coming to be the vogue, not only at all festive gatherings, but on Sundays, (a slow rag is an excellent processional) at weddings, for funerals and what not. One can only reply, that in the last analysis, the whole matter is one of taste. It is true, nevertheless, that there are tastes and tastes. The po- sition above mentioned demonstrates the varity of this. Popular music has indeed, in some quarters, the general vogue attributed to it. It is frequently made use of at colored weddings; it is the common order at Polish funerals. The gist of all this is simply, that the propiUety of Michigan songs at sings in the University of Michigan, is just as distinctive as those of other occasions. There are enough songs to fill an evening's program without repetition., Most of them are not to be compared with the ordinary pop- ular pieces, in either beauty, harmony, or sentiment. The innovation in this regard comes with very good grace. w PlatInum Portraits When You Desire Prortraits of Qi Time's Co ato_ 000 Visiting We have just received samples of the Styles.
