Haller dent body; which does not seem capa- ble of providing other means of caring for sick students than an underman- ned clinical hospital; which cannot afford to better the terrible conditions existant among the lower classes in Ann Arbor, who dwell upon the oppo- site side of theHuron river, this same university is apparently establishing and supporting a foreign mission among the poor, downtrodden heathen. This is not meant as a criticism against foreign missions. They have their place, and a great place, too, but; until the university can better its own frightful conditions, why should it take upon itself the support of a project whose only value from our standpoint, is one of advertising. It does not create a sensation to provide better conditions for the stu- dent body, or to establish a good in- firmary. Other colleges have done this and are many years in advance of us. They are so far advanced that they can afford to support foreign projects like the Busrah mission. These reflect great glory and are an an excellent medium of advertising. These seem to be followed and even supported by prominent faculty men when almost nothing is done to safe- guard the health of the students, or to better the condition of our own lower classes. This work would not be noticed as much as a big foreign mission, naturally, but which is more needed? If the university does not support this Busrah scheme and does not maintain these men in that miasmic spot of the Mesopotamian valley, why is another organization permitted to make free of the university name? The Board of Regents'has protested against this by recent resolution. It seems a pity that whenever apparent sanction and good advertising is de- sired that the name of the university must be dragged in by the heels in black face type. The conscientious housekeeper sweeps out her home carefully before going out to give advice to her neigh- bors; the gossip and sloven stands on the front porch, or leans over the back fence, and tells others how to run their affairs, while her children run wild and her house is untidy and dirty. The old saying of the stone throwing ability of glass house dwell- ers covers this case. It seems that the same might be said of the Busrah mission project. Here, as elsewhere, charity begins at home. The university, which admit- tedly has not the means to provide for sanitary conditions among the stu- [Coo Display Poor Taste. The action of the Women's League in voting to sell post cards with the picture of Dr. James B. Angell upon it during Anniversary week to make money, displays extremely poor taste. That this organization should make money is perfectly legitimate, but when they use the President-Emeritus as a medium for this purpose they overstep the border line of decency. Another picture would serve the same ends and would not display such shocking taste. F. W. WILLARD LECTURES TO ENGINEERING STUDENTS Mr. F. W. Willard, '05 E, of the Ca- ble Rope agd Insulation shops of the Western Electric Co., lectured yester- day morning before A. H. White's class in chemical engineering on "Problems in Dessication," discussing the commercial methods of drying in- dustrial material, such as wood, rub- ber, fruit, vegetables, and textiles. Under the auspices of the Engineer- ing Society, Mr. Willard gave a public lecture last evening on "Insulating Materials and Their Limitations." Aristolochites Banquet Tonight.
